Just 42 days after the crash, Lauda returned for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza with his wounds still healing. His helmet and balaclava aggravated the burns on his head, and Lauda later admitted that fear initially overwhelmed him when he returned to the cockpit.
Fellow drivers helped pull him from the burning wreck, but Lauda suffered severe burns and, more dangerously, serious lung damage after inhaling toxic fumes.
On August 1, 1976, Niki Lauda crashed his Ferrari 312T2 during the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, striking the barriers before the car caught fire and was hit by other competitors.
