Planting trees is great, but it's not enough to fight climate change.
Carbon markets let farmers earn money by planting new trees and selling "carbon credits" to companies and governments looking to offset their emissions. For coffee farmers, this can be a lifeline when coffee prices drop.
But current carbon credit rules don't reward farmers for keeping their existing forests, just for planting new trees. New research from the Smithsonian warns this could lead to farmers cutting down their old trees (releasing carbon into the atmosphere) just to plant new ones that qualify for credits.
In a study published today, scientists show that even if every coffee farm planted new trees, it still wouldn't make up for the carbon released by clearing mature forests.
“To be clear, planting shade trees on monoculture coffee farms is a positive step, but our findings show tree planting alone can’t make up for what you lose when you remove mature shade trees," said Smithsonian ecologist Ruth Bennett.
Currently, the Smithsonian's Bird Friendly coffee certification is the only program for farmers who protect existing forests. To enact real change, carbon markets need to create similar incentives to preserve mature forests and make them accessible to small farmers.

The Trump Administration is attempting to silence climate scientists and sideline climate science. But the American people are facing the rapidly worsening reality of the climate crisis – from deadly tornadoes and monster hurricanes to giant “rain bombs” and massive floods to devastating droughts and apocalyptic fires. Dismantling the National Climate Assessment doesn’t make America great – it is reckless and leaves us unprepared for the impacts of the climate crisis that continue to grow more severe.

Biochar is ready to scale—but credits aren’t being issued fast enough.
With most registries, suppliers face months-long waits to go from data collection to credit issuance. This means they don’t get paid fast enough to grow their businesses.

1/ Isometric has been conditionally approved by @icao as an issuer of CORSIA Eligible Emissions Units. CORSIA is an aviation industry program that aims to reduce emissions and “offset the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that cannot be reduced…with emissions units".

1/ Isometric today released a protocol for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) via wastewater alkalinity enhancement (WAE) for public consultation. Wastewater treatment is a perfect candidate for carbon removal.

2/ High quality, trustworthy credits are needed in as many carbon removal pathways as possible if we’re going to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Trees are one of the most energy efficient forms of carbon removal and we need more of them to meet our climate goals.

3/ The protocol offers three key innovations that solve long-standing issues in forestry based carbon removal: tech-first quantification, dynamic baselines and a new approach to leakage and life cycle assessments.

I'm looking for people in communications, advertising, and fundraising who want to volunteer in an ambitious conservation project that will set place in the cloud forests of the Andes:
We want to bring back to the San Antonio mountain forest a holy number of seven species of birds that were extirpated between 60-100 years ago.
Does anyone want to help?
