NVDA, TSM, MU: Nvidia custom HBM hits 30% more bandwidth while UBS flags 91% demand surge and 10% supply shortfall + Nvidia is working with Samsung and TSMC to design the base die for NVHBM, its custom HBM, per Seoul Economic Daily. Shifting the memory controller off the GPU onto the base die and shrinking the PHY 60% lifts bandwidth up to 30% and cuts power 15% versus standard HBM4E. + Samsung's own 4nm base die lines sit only at Hwaseong Line 17 and part of Pyeongtaek P3, too thin to absorb custom volumes. Industry estimates put TSMC 3nm yield above 90% against roughly 60% for Samsung Foundry 2nm SF2, so Nvidia is consolidating base die production at TSMC. + UBS projects HBM demand next year at 61.5 billion gigabits, up 91%, against shipments of only 54.6 billion gigabits, leaving a 10% shortfall. TSMC is answering with two new 3nm lines at Fab 18 in Tainan plus 3nm at its second Arizona plant and second Kumamoto plant. Samsung is hedging by validating the base die on its own 2nm process. The demand math keeps compounding. JPMorgan puts the HBM market at $64B in 2026, $160B in 2027 and $280B in 2028, with memory shortfalls near 20% in each of the next two years. Every point of that shortfall is pricing power for whoever ships qualified HBM first, which is why base die work is consolidating at the highest yield foundry.

All adjacent neocloud, GPUaaS, and power shell capacity will be used. You can quibble with their business models, viability of such, but not the demand for their capacity. re-rumblings 80% of said cos will not survive. Power demand survives. Understand the economics of that reality.

LA sits on thousands of oil wells hidden among homes and schools. Making people sick. Cleanup stalled. Operators walk away. June 2026: LA City Council voted 14-0 to draft a phase-out ordinance. If it passes, LA becomes the largest US city to phase out oil drilling. 👀

NVDA, META, GOOG — 100K+ GPUs: Meta bets on Nvidia's open networking for Vera Rubin factories + Meta is adopting Nvidia Spectrum-6 102.4Tb/s Ethernet switches plus Spectrum-X Multiplane for agentic AI factories of more than 100,000 Vera Rubin GPUs, the biggest hyperscaler commitment to Nvidia's open networking stack yet. Meta is also rolling out its own N-IceCube switch running FBOSS software. + Nvidia opened the Vera Rubin rack blueprints through the MGX 1.2 spec: racks up to 250kW, rack scale blind mate liquid cooling, cable free compute trays and a liquid cooled 5,000A busbar. An Open Data Center Spec v0.7 with AMD, Google and Meta, and a grid resilience spec that restores near full load in under 2 seconds, complete the package. + Google added Falcon Transport support to future ConnectX-10 SuperNICs, giving Nvidia two Tier-1 hyperscaler anchors for the open factory spec at once.

neoclouds that figure out how to be power-first (not just gpu-first) will do much better than the ones that stay nvidia resellers this will help them get customers and give them freedom (both in not being locked into just nvidia, and finally not depending on a landlord for their data center) they're following the playbook of the ones who figured this out first, @CrusoeAI and @IREN_Ltd now we see other neoclouds trying to do the same: - @CoreWeave tried to buy @Core_Scientific for $9B, partly to get more power and sites (core scientific’s shareholders voted no) - @nebiusai is building its own data centers in missouri, pennsylvania, and finland instead of renting space it's the same reason inference companies want to own their gpus instead of renting them. for neoclouds, owning power matters just as much - it will get them customers faster. AI companies need more and more compute and will do deals with whoever has compute. a neocloud that owns power won't need to wait - it gives them the option to swap in new gpus, especially if they start using more than one kind of chip (which is already happening and will happen even more) - no landlord! if you own the site, you’re not paying part of what you make to a landlord

A fallback position is that they ought to have government buy them (or, at least, the development rights). At least that way, the spending would be in tension w other government priorities, resulting in some real limits The current practice, where local government can just costlessly (apparently; irl there are major costs in terms of foregone economic activity and taxes) encase its underlying city in amber, is a disaster.

🚨 AI'S BIGGEST LOSERS COULD BE THE ONES FINANCING ITS BOOM. GS highlights four AI infrastructure business models: 🔴 Powered Shells: Predictable revenue, low ROIC. 🟠 GPU-as-a-Service: Higher return potential, but capex-heavy and exposed to obsolescence. 🟢 Token Factories: Highest ROIC potential, but pricing and utilization risks. 🔵 Asset-Light Models: Lower capex, weaker customer lock-in. The investor takeaway? Don't confuse revenue growth with value creation. A company growing 30% while earning below its cost of capital can destroy shareholder value. The real winners won't necessarily have the biggest order books or highest capex. They'll generate the highest sustainable ROIC relative to their cost of capital. In AI investing, follow the returns on capital, not the capex headlines.

🇺🇸2 states pump almost 60% of America's oil Texas produced 5.75M b/d in and New Mexico 2.24M b/d. Together that's 8.0M of the US's 13.6M b/d. The Permian Basin spans both, which makes it the single largest engine of US supply. North Dakota is a distant 3rd at 1.15M b/d. Every other state in the top 10 produces under 500k. 🌊 The chart leaves out the federal offshore Gulf, 1.9M b/d. Counted as a state, it would rank 3rd, and this week Hurricane Isaias shut in about 2/3 of it. 📉 Onshore barrels now face their own problem. Shipping US crude to Asia costs $40 a barrel and the Brent–WTI gap has widened. Do not miss my latest article on it. Link 👇 themerchantsnews.substack.co…
