READY TO ROLL: CITY OF DAVIS CELEBRATES NEW SKATEPARK August 27, 2026 - The City of Davis Parks and Community Services Department is excited to announce the ribbon cutting ceremony for the renovated Community Park Skatepark on Friday, September 18, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All are invited to attend this celebration that will feature a ribbon cutting, vendors, free merchandise and music. The skatepark represents the City’s continued investment in improving existing infrastructure while creating an exciting destination for residents and visitors for years to come. In 2024, the City determined that the 30+ year old skatepark was outdated and needed a complete overhaul. Through community outreach, the City released and reviewed proposals for a full design and build renovation of the skatepark. Designed and constructed by Grindline Skateparks, Inc., a company known for their world-class projects and reputation for combining community needs with skateboard use. The new space welcomes skaters of all ages and skill levels to gather, recreate and connect. The skatepark project broke ground in March 2026, and after five months of work the park is ready for use. The $1.2M park would not be possible without the allocation of Capital Improvement Funds, Park Impact Fees, community fundraising and the continued advocacy of our local skater community. This project symbolizes a true community build. While the skatepark will be open, additional site work will continue into the weeks ahead. The City and Grindline will be working on the final landscaping throughout November. The skatepark will be open daily from dawn to dusk and skaters are asked to abide by all park rules, which are posted onsite. For more information, visit cityofdavis.org/city-hall/pa…. The Davis City Council will convene on Tuesday, May 19, at 5:30 p.m. to recognize and congratulate the efforts of the following individuals/organizations. Thong Hy Huynh Awards: · Sharon Shoemaker · ¿Un Cafecito? Golden Heart Awards: · Kyle Kwak · Vera Lew · Liliana Teague · Carson Schiller · Saron Tadeos · Vivian Uyeyama “We are proud to recognize this year’s recipients of the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards and the Golden Heart Awards,” said Mayor Donna Neville. “These honors highlight the people who make Davis stronger, recognizing those who stand up for civil rights, support others and push through challenges. Their efforts make our community more caring and connected.” Established in 1986, the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards recognize local individuals or organizations promoting civil rights, civic engagement or positive human relations and are helping improve the quality of life for Davis residents and visitors. The awards are in memory of Davis High School student Thong Hy Huynh, who was stabbed to death on May 4, 1983, and to help raise awareness for social justice and inclusion. The Golden Heart Awards were first presented in 1994 to honor the memory of Andrew Mockus, who was tragically killed, by his peers, in 1992. The awards celebrate exceptional young people in the Davis community with a focus on students who may not receive recognition elsewhere. There are two award categories: the Service Award and the Personal Challenge Award. The Service Award honors individuals who have made meaningful contributions to their community, peers, or school. The Personal Challenge Award recognizes those who have faced and overcome significant obstacles in their lives. CITY RECEIVES $1 MILLION FROM REPRESENTATIVE MIKE THOMPSON Read the full press release at: cityofdavis.org/Home/Compone… April 6, 2026 – Today, Representative Mike Thompson presented a $1 million check to the City of Davis for the Davis Amtrak Station as one of his Community Funded Projects for Fiscal Year 2026. The funds will go toward bicycle and pedestrian improvements, including building a connection to Olive Drive to provide access for residents south of the station. Amtrak is currently developing an undercrossing connecting its ADA improvement project at the station. The Davis Train Station is one of the busiest stations in the region and serves over 10% of the total Capitol Corridor ridership. This important station is one of 18 stations in northern California along the 170-mile rail corridor. The Capitol Corridor has 15 daily round trips that stop at the Davis Station. This project would provide additional access for bicyclists, pedestrians and residents to enter and exit downtown Davis and connect to South Davis in a more direct and safer route, without motor vehicles. “We appreciate Representative Thompson’s support in helping us move this important project forward,” said Mayor Donna Neville. “This investment will make a meaningful difference in how people access the station and navigate our city for years to come.” “We are grateful to Representative Thompson for his dedication to our community and focus on public safety,” said City Manager Daryel Dunston. “These funds will help us improve multimodal accessibility to the station, increase access from South Davis to downtown and enhance our bicycling and pedestrian infrastructure.” The current location of the Davis train station was built in 1913 after the original, which was built in 1868, was burned down in a fire. The Mission Revival style train station is a historic landmark and is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. CITY OF DAVIS SHARES IMPORTANT PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDERS FOR PICNIC DAY 2026 Read the full press release: cityofdavis.org/Home/Compone… April 6, 2026 – As Picnic Day approaches on Saturday, April 18, the City of Davis is reminding community members and visitors of important public safety measures and expectations to help ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone. While Picnic Day brings thousands of people together for more than 200 activities hosted by UC Davis, the City is focused on proactive communication, safety awareness and responsible celebration across the community. To support these efforts, the Davis City Council has approved several measures for Picnic Day weekend, including the following: • Safety Enhancement Zones (SEZs): Three designated zones will be in place across the city, including areas such as Slide Hill Park and Walnut Park, where violations may carry increased penalties and will be enforced from 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, through 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 19. • Temporary Alcohol Ban in Parks: Alcohol will not be permitted in any City park during the enforcement period from 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, through 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 19. • Increased Enforcement: All local and State laws remain in effect and will be actively enforced throughout the weekend. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious or illegal activity promptly. • For emergencies, including crimes in progress, fires or medical incidents, call 9-1-1 or 530-758-3600. • Callers should remain on the line and clearly answer dispatcher questions to help responders. In addition to these reminders, no special event permits will be given by the City of Davis or any City department for this day to reduce congestion, improve emergency response times and minimize risk associated with overlapping crowds. This applies to all City departments, including permits that may otherwise be processed separately through departments such as Fire or Police. The Parade will also be shortened by one block to support staffing and operational efficiency. The City of Davis will also be increasing police staffing with regional mutual aid, expanding fire and emergency operations, enhancing traffic control and barricades and activating the City’s Emergency Operations Center to monitor conditions in real time. The City is also working closely with UC Davis, local businesses and community organizations to reinforce expectations, improve communication and promote responsible celebration throughout the day. More information about Picnic Day planning can be found on the City of Davis’ webpage at cityofdavis.org/picnicday.

PRESS RELEASE: 2026 WASTE SORTING MONITORING BEGINS SOON For the full press release visit: cityofdavis.org/Home/Compone… The City of Davis announced today that the annual waste collection route monitoring for contamination will soon begin in April to ensure the City is in compliance with State regulations under Senate Bill SB 1383, the Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Act. The law, which went into effect in January 2022, requires all cities in California to perform contamination monitoring, a process to see how well waste is being sorted when placed in the trash, recycling and organics containers for collection. 2026 marks the 4th year the City is conducting this monitoring. The law is very specific about how cities are to perform this contamination monitoring. Route monitoring, or “lid flipping” is when a number of containers on each hauler route are visually checked for proper waste sorting. If contamination is found, the City is required to provide additional education to customers on how to properly sort waste. Over 1,000 trash, recycling and organics bins need to be checked throughout the City annually. To perform this task for the upcoming year, the City has hired APTIM, a private company that specializes in this type of work. APTIM staff will be wearing safety vests with the APTIM logo as well as ID tags that identify them as an APTIM employee working for the City of Davis. Starting soon in April, APTIM staff will be checking trash, recycling and organics containers that are set out for collection. APTIM staff will lift the lid of containers to see the contents. Bagged waste will not be disturbed and only the material at the top of the container will be reviewed. If waste materials are sorted correctly in that container, they will leave a “congratulations” tag to thank the customer for doing a good job. If the container has contamination (items inside that should not be there) APTIM staff will leave a “let’s sort this out” tag, encouraging customers to place waste into the correct container. Both tags will also have a waste sorting guide on the back to show what goes in each container. The consultant will finish container checks by April 20. When route monitoring was performed last year, 88% of the surveyed trash, recycling and organics bins were found to be correctly sorted. The most common contaminates found in recycling and organics bins were plastic bags, which are neither recyclable nor compostable. In 2023 and 2024, 81% of the surveyed trash, recycling and organics bins were found be correctly sorted. “Correctly sorting waste is so important,” says Mayor Donna Neville. “Landfills are the 3rd largest source of methane emissions in California. The Davis community has consistently been ahead of the game across California in ensuring waste is being properly sorted, and now it’s more important than ever to understand the actions we can take to reduce our carbon footprint. These checks will help our staff understand what outreach is effective, and where we might have gaps.” These State-mandated route monitoring checks are not punitive and the tags left by APTIM are not citations, fines or any other notice of violation. The waste container checks are only to see how the City overall is doing with waste diversion, with reminders given on how to sort waste properly. City staff may follow-up with additional checks on excessively contaminated bins, but citations and fines for contaminated bins would not be considered unless there is an egregious situation with continued contamination over a long period of time where continued tagging and reminders is not showing any improvement in waste sorting behavior. Visit DavisRecycling.org for more details on the SLCP regulations and for information on how to sort waste correctly. The Public Works Utilities and Operations Department can be reached at [email protected] or 530-757-5686.
