The people most impacted by climate change often don’t hear about it in the languages they speak.
In this interview with @CitiesQuestion, I spoke about why climate communication must become more accessible and rooted in local realities.

"Let’s ask ourselves: Who benefits from the ‘build more’ philosophy – the city, its people and its ecology or merely a few vested individuals and organisations?"
We ought to heed PK Das' counsel before collective sanity goes out the window.
We are given to believe that higher volumes of construction and supply of building stock will ease the shortfall crisis in housing, transport, and amenities. The steady decline in the quality of life in cities shows this is not true.

The city of Guwahati has lost 12 sq km of tree cover (the size of Heathrow Airport) since 2001, while Assam's forest loss equals two Delhis. Flyovers, highways & unchecked construction have stripped the city of its green lungs.
Citizens as @buragohainu @warriormoms_ne are fighting back, but will the authorities wake up before it’s too late?
The construction of roads, flyovers, and other projects has taken a heavy toll on trees in Guwahati. While people have come out to save them, the authorities are yet to realise that existing trees must be protected and new ones planted.

Cities can no longer afford to ignore trees. Master plans must prioritise them, not as obstacles, but as essentials for climate resilience. What cities need & why!

If one #tree holds pure joy and enchantment, besides performing a host of functions for other life forms, then a community of trees is a veritable green party; chop one or a few, and the entire cluster is affected.

In the age of environmental unfreedom, active participation of people in air quality governance is imperative. I wrote a short commentary on this @CitiesQuestion; I welcome all to read it and give me your critical feedback.

It is noteworthy that while people’s awareness and lived experience of #airpollution have grown, their democratic participation in addressing the issue remains minimal.

The ongoing #IFFIGoa is one of the reasons that the lush state is in ecological decline (the other being aspirational 2nd homes).
This sharp piece by Solano Da Silva shows how amendments systematically undermined good zoning plans to bring #Goa to this state.
@CitiesQuestion
As early as 1986, Goa had put in place legally binding zoning plans encompassing the entire state’s land mass. This ensured that those who live in Goa have a sense of place where the urban or built-up is constituted alongside agricultural and wild spaces.

The areas around Mumbai’s stations are hubs of diverse activities, but they are often dominated by chaos, making them stressful and exhausting.
In this essay, we explore how redesigning these spaces can improve safety and transform them into more pleasant, people-friendly environments through pedestrianization and better channelizing traffic flow.

Water secure cities with renewable energy security is the call that will remain integral to planning the cities in India. @arvindunni recently delivered a lecture on the issues in Master Plan of Delhi.
While access to water is divided between the urban and the rural, and between the rich and the poor, Jal Satyagraha has been largely confined to deprived & vulnerable in rural communities. It may become centre stage in cities with the rising water crisis.

While we are rigorous in our research and communications about women's issues and the nuances of how women navigate our cities differently, there is still a wide gap in our understanding simply because we are not women and don't have to navigate with the same cautiousness and subtle fears that a woman does. @jashbaat 's article on her takeaway's after attending our #CommunityWalk #3 in Borivali last October blew us away because of the way she was able to convey these nuances so succinctly and evoke these feelings with a mere words.
Big congratulations to her for winning the Laadli award for the article! Very well deserved! 🎉
