Being appointed as a trustee comes with real responsibilities, particularly when it comes to how decisions are documented, records are maintained and beneficiaries are protected. Citadel Fiduciary Partner, Mbonisi Ndlovu joined @SimonPB on @MoneywebNOW to discuss what South Africa’s proposed Regulation of Trusts Bill, 2026 could mean in practice for trustees and beneficiaries. Their conversation covered record keeping, beneficial ownership requirements, the proposed stronger oversight role of the Master of the High Court and why family or non-professional trustees need to fully understand the obligations that come with the role. At a time when uncertainty often dominates the narrative, The Uncomfortable Truth created a space for something increasingly valuable: thoughtful, informed conversation. @CitadelSA, together with the @FinancialMail convened leaders, innovators, investors, and changemakers to examine the realities shaping South Africa and the opportunities that emerge when we confront them honestly. The event was defined by insightful discussion, healthy debate, and a shared belief that South Africa’s future will not be determined solely by the challenges we face, but by how we choose to respond to them. Because progress starts when we're willing to confront the uncomfortable truth. #TheUncomfortableTruth

@geordinhl joined @robrose_za for a one-on-one conversation at The Uncomfortable Truth, presented by @CitadelSA, in partnership with @FinancialMail, to examine what it means to lead @Our_DA at a pivotal point in South African politics. The interview considered whether the party has fully capitalised on the changing political landscape, and whether it can extend its reach into major metros such as Johannesburg. It also explored the compromises and tensions that come with participating in the Government of National Unity. From economic reform and transformation to coalition stability, the discussion explored how the DA balances its principles with the practical realities of government. The conversation ended with an equally important moment of reflection: where has the party misjudged the political landscape, and what must it learn if it hopes to earn the confidence of more South Africans? #TheUncomfortableTruth

What will it take to unlock South Africa’s economic potential? At The Uncomfortable Truth, presented by @CitadelSA in partnership with the Financial Mail, Whitey Basson, @alanknottcraig, Professor @HaroonBhorat and @SongezoZibi came together for a candid discussion about the choices shaping South Africa’s future. The panel explored the realities of doing business in South Africa, the relationship between business and government, the economic potential of the township economy, and the importance of capable local government. The conversation also confronted some of the country’s most difficult questions: Are we accurately measuring unemployment? Is the current approach to transformation delivering meaningful economic growth? How can government drive change from within? And what would it take to build an economy that supports firms, entrepreneurship and job creation? #TheUncomfortableTruth

Together, @CitadelSA and @FinancialMail share a belief that real progress begins with honest dialogue. Dialogue that challenges assumptions, broadens perspectives, and encourages action. That belief is what inspired The Uncomfortable Truth - an event designed to bring together some of South Africa’s leading thinkers to tackle the issues shaping our country, economy, and future. As, Citadel CEO, Sajeel Maharaj noted in his welcome address: “Optimism is not believing everything will work out perfectly. It is believing that our actions still matter and that the future is something we create together.” #TheUncomfortableTruth

South Africa’s trust landscape could be set for significant change. The draft Regulation of Trusts Bill 2026 proposes greater transparency, accountability and regulatory oversight, with potential changes to reporting, record keeping, beneficial ownership and trustee accountability. While the proposed legislation could introduce new governance and administrative obligations, it does not change the fundamental role that trusts can play in effective estate and succession planning. Importantly, the draft Bill must still proceed through the parliamentary process before it can become law and no implementation date has been announced. The discussion was facilitated by our Advisory Partner, Kirsten Smit, who was joined by leading independent property analyst and commentator, Keillen Ndlovu. Kirsten highlighted the challenge investors face in uncertain markets. Keillen added that this is particularly important in property, where investors should take a long-term view and consider how listed property can provide diversification across different sectors and geographies as part of a broader portfolio.
