Weird saying this out loud, but the reason I respond to HALLOWEEN '78 is not the kills, or the lore, but the Carpenter touch. The gliding camera, the emphasis on suspense over gore, the driving ominous piano... that the better sequels only "come close" to matching it says a lot.
