The word “ungrading” is an active present participle. It’s a way of engaging with grades as a system, distinct from “not grading”.
It means acknowledging context and material circumstances of students and teachers, then doing whatever we can to push back against broken systems.
I'm at a talk about ungrading and I'm wondering, like...so, one reason I dislike the word "ungrading" is because it feels fundamentally dishonest to me, when you are, in fact, still grading. How do y'all who ungrade reconcile that? #Grading4Growth
