(1/11) 🧵In my piece in today’s FT, I argue that the corporate tax is an excellent tool for taxing the same wealth that proponents of billionaires’ taxes (or the CA wealth tax) are reaching for. Link at end of thread.

I think these charts are worth keeping in mind at the same time. 1. When we're talking about the typical person, wealth is largely a lifecycle phenomenon. 2. When we're talking about wealth, the typical person is largely a rounding error.

Had a great conversation yesterday about small business with @omzidar @lilybatch and @amyhanauer . We discussed tax cuts and below: how the wealthiest "small" businesses --auto dealers, beer distributors-- are often legally protected from competition and not "small" at all
Co-authors of the Everywhere Millionaire, @omzidar and Eric Zwick, explain how tax cuts intended to protect small businesses have created a new group of extremely wealthy small business owners.

So many great quotes/points in @riccoja paper. Even years into this, did a double take here on the 2/3: "in 2027, the top 1 percent of tax units will receive $5.2 trillion, or 23 percent of all income—an amount roughly equal to the income received by the bottom two thirds"
New work from @The_Budget_Lab looking at: (1) how much untaxed income there is at the top (2) why much of that income would disappear if you tried to tax it (3) how to redesign the tax code so that that (2) is less of a problem budgetlab.yale.edu/research/…

And so true and needs to change: "gains are taxed on a realization or cash basis, not an accrual basis. If it were guaranteed that an investor would eventually pay tax on those gains, the distinction between cash income and accrual income would mostly be a matter of timing"

I told you so.
Norway's controversial 2021–2024 reforms nearly doubled the tax on business wealth. Firms of affected owners did not invest less, and outmigration was limited to the very top, from @Mariusring nber.org/papers/w35854

A sign that people are not being "lifted" off SNAP: they're showing up to wait in the hours-long line at the overwhelmed local food pantry.
Food pantry workers on the front lines of feeding their neighbors say they're facing unprecedented challenges after cuts by the Trump administration. Demand is surging, while the amount of food they're getting from the federal government has fallen. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/wes…

This is such an important point. The laffer curve is not some fixed law of the universe, it depends heavily on how we structure the tax system itself. Ending the step-up loophole by taxing gains at death is one of the most important tax policy changes we could make.
Replying to @riccoja
So, for (3), we ask: what would revenue potential look like without step-up? Taxing gains at death would raise revenue directly. But, crucially, it'd also make realizations less responsive to tax—there'd be much less of a reason to defer—so we'd get a higher Laffer curve peak.

Really important piece from Roge Karma. Democrats must tackle pass-through income if they want to make the tax code fair. theatlantic.com/economy/2026…

Highly rec this @washingtonsun piece showing the harm that's done when the Admin illegally impounds funds & that the Admin often grossly mischaracterizes the public services it is halting, often in service of their relentless efforts to demonize immigrants.
Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Alfonso Griego says a federally funded college success program was the key for him to move forward on the path to becoming a veterinarian for farm animals. Now that program is one of dozens facing an uncertain future. washingtonsun.com/immigratio…

(6/8) We also suggest a menu of “sin” taxes and some other revenue buckets (returning some tax policy parameters to earlier levels, incremental individual capital tax measures). Altogether, the menu raises $15t, but we are under no illusion Congress will do all of this.

(4/8) The corporate tax is a better way to tax capital than many, since it doesn’t exempt foreigners, endowments, or retirement earnings. It can reach billionaires, respond to offshoring, and handle the challenge of taxing AI profits, regardless of how that turns out.

(3/8) Take the corporate tax. With a bit of redesign, it can fall cleanly on rents, be resilient in the face of tax competition challenges, and raise serious revenue in a fair and efficient manner. We suggest how, drawing on my recent Hamilton paper. hamiltonproject.org/publicat…

(5/8) Funding the IRS is a no-brainer that can help honest taxpayers by raising much needed funds for the fisc (w/o tax increases), improving service, better targeting audits at cheats, and reducing the disadvantage faced by honest firms/industries relative to those that skirt.

This is a really valuable (and concerning) report. Over 50 companies: 1) paid the Trump Administration money and 2) received pardons/dismissed lawsuits or terminated consent orders protecting customers
The Trump admin has canceled federal investigations, lawsuits, and penalties for OVER 200 corporations. Over 40% of those corporations have ties to Trump or his administration. In this admin, a donation or partnership with Trump could make your legal matters disappear.
