We are disturbed to learn that @CalgaryOpera has removed bass-baritone Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega from future performances of "Tosca" after he unveiled a Palestinian flag during the curtain call on opening night. Art is political, and artists should not be punished for expressing support for the Palestinian people as they face a genocide. This decision must be reversed.

Lina Attalah, Mada Masr’s editor-in-chief, received a summons today from the Supreme State Security Prosecution to attend a questioning session on Wednesday, October 21. The summons did not say why she is being questioned.
The new investigation, Case 9072/2026, is the sixth case brought against Mada Masr, its journalists and its editor-in-chief in the past six years. The most recent was in August 2025, when the security prosecution released Attalah on LE30,000 bail. She was questioned at the time on charges of “broadcasting false news” and “using a website without a license,” based on a National Security Agency investigation report, in relation to a Mada Masr story on prisoners’ complaints of abuse in detention facilities. When asked why she trusted the sources cited in the story, Attalah said she had abided by professional journalistic standards and had acted in the public interest. She also pointed to the legally protected right to inform authorities of events through publication, noting that the outlet presents a full range of viewpoints.

استدعت نيابة أمن الدولة، اليوم، رئيسة تحرير «مدى مصر»، لينا عطا الله، للتحقيق، الأربعاء المقبل 21 أكتوبر، في قضية برقم 9072 لسنة 2026 حصر أمن دولة عليا، بحسب الاستدعاء الذي لم يتضمن توضيحًا لسبب التحقيق.
القضية الجديدة هي السادسة بحق «مدى مصر» وصحفييه ورئيسة تحريره خلال ست سنوات، والتي كان آخرها في أغسطس 2025، حين أخلت «أمن الدولة» سبيل عطا الله بكفالة 30 ألف جنيه، على ذمة القضية 6182 لسنة 2025 حصر أمن دولة، بعدما وجهت لها وقتها تهمتي «إذاعة أخبار كاذبة واستخدام موقع بدون ترخيص»، بناءً على محضر تحريات «الأمن الوطني»، على خلفية تقرير صحفي عن شكاوى سجناء من تعرضهم لانتهاكات، وبينما سألتها النيابة وقتها عن أسباب الثقة في المصادر المذكورة في التقرير، أكدت عطا الله مراعاتها قواعد مهنة الصحافة، واستهدافها المصلحة العامة، والحق في إبلاغ السلطات من خلال النشر خصوصًا مع عرض الموقع للآراء كافة.

We are talking about 30 months of preparation for people holding doctorates, whether from prestigious Egyptian universities or prestigious foreign universities.
A comprehensive mechanism will be established, overseen by the speaker of the Egyptian parliament, together with a group of trusted intellectuals, politicians, the minister of higher education and the minister of justice.
Whether there are 200, 300, 500 or 1,000 of them, they will spend 30 months here at the Academy learning what a state is, what its capabilities and resources are, and how to preserve them.
The Egyptian people will then have the opportunity to elect and choose from among this elite.
