Biased data results in biased arrests, which feeds into the predictive data, compounding the bias. Until we have more transparency on the data used and the algorithms, we can't trust the outcomes.

15. "It is an unhappy truth that racism is a way of life for the vast majority of white Americans, spoken and unspoken, acknowledged and denied, subtle and sometimes not so subtle -- the disease of racism permeates and poisons the body politic." -- MLK Jr. 3/31/1968

Agreed.
I work on 3 things at HubSpot, one of them is Boldness. Nudging the company and our people to be bolder, to take more risk, try more things.

Früher Morgen in #Kyjiw.
Der Zug aus der polnischen Grenzstadt #Przemyszl fährt den wenig beleuchteten Hauptbahnhof ein. Viele Frauen mit Kindern steigen aus, die über Neujahr ihre Heimat besuchen.

An absolute masterpiece by George.
My last piece of 2022, "50 Percent". This one means an incredible amount to me. Just 1 of 2 northern white rhinos left on the planet is in this image.
Your support means the absolute world 🦏🤎

Journalists still blocked.
"In reality, I’m still locked out of my Twitter account unless I agree to delete a specific tweet at the behest of the billionaire. Several of the other suspended journalists are in the same boat." theintercept.com/2022/12/20/…

Hmm. “Combine these three dirty secrets and it’s hard to understand why anyone would use a startup’s product, knowing that it will collect as much data as it can, secure it only indifferently, & sell that data on to sleazy data-brokers.” @doctorow link.medium.com/tyAbT1mtRvb
And a new dystopian term: Abandonware: Neuro implants from start-ups that fail. Patents prevent hacking, security was abysmal because startups are about growth not security, customer data is sold off when start-up fails. Now you've got dead tech in you.
@doctorow proposes open-sourcing the tech to avoid many of these problems, which definitely sounds like it's worth exploring.

Holy shit. January 6 police officers and their families skip Mitch McConnell as he tries to shake their hands. (h/t @acyn)
This is fantastic. Two epic moments jump out at me:
Management: I expected this would take months as tracks and systems were verified.
Spirit: Once again, the Ukrainian indomitable spirit shines through. Look at the art on those trains! The joy on the conductor's face!
The Victory train arrived today in liberated #Kherson. The first passengers were able to return home. This is an incredible feeling! Grateful to all railway workers @Ukrzaliznytsia @AKamyshin for restoring the rail service in such a short period

This is maturity and a learning mindset: the doctor is going back and reviewing what he got wrong during the pandemic, allowing us to learn from them with him.
I don't know how many lives he saved during the pandemic, but his posts helped me remain compassionate and safe.
