Tonight’s Newscast with Chris and Adam…
I point out that it isnt just about the person and the policies, but also the manner of any victory… a squeaked win might install someone in Number 10, but if they cant command the loyalty of 100 + MPs their Chancellor won’t be able to give a Budget that the markets will believe will be delivered, even before they work out if it adds up.
And also how the markets appeared to give up trying to guess what was going on this afternoon…

Busy day yesterday from Today and BBC Breakfast to Newsnight..
Greatly enjoyed speaking to @adamfleming on Newscast about quantum computing, fiscal devolution, Barnsley as a Tuscan hill villa, and Rachel Reeves’ nerdish delight at being the only person to have done Mais lecture twice…

I’m biased but I agree.
Good to join Newscast with @adamfleming @LukeJSullivan @hzeffman yesterday on the continuing Mandelson fallout and what it means for Starmer.
If I do say so myself I think it is one of the better discussions on the subject! Give it a listen

As we talked about on last week’s televised Newscast… the prevalence of the B-word was extremely notable among Cabinet ministers in Liverpool… @ChrisMasonBBC @ProfJaneGreen @adamfleming
Exclusive:
* Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves plan to blame Nigel Farage for tax rises in the Budget. They will say he delivered Brexit with 'easy sloganeering' then walked away, failing to take responsibility
* They will explicitly link the OBR's upcoming productivity downgrade - which has left a huge hole in the public finances - to the economic hit after Brexit. Rather than just blaming the Tories they plan to go for Farage personally
* So much for the conference afterglow: A new analysis of polls show just how dire things really are for Labour and the Tories
* Starmer is the most unpopular PM on record, while Labour suffered the greatest fall in popularity of any governing party in their first 10 months
* The task facing Kemi Badenoch is huge. The number of 'core' Reform voters - those who consider themselves aligned with the party's values - has risen from 1.68m during election to 3.8m
* Shadow Cabinet ministers are privately hoping that Shabana Mahmood succeeds in tackling small boats. The Tories best hope is that migration reduces in salience as an issue by the time of the next election

We here at the #WPIOOTBGW Global HQ have a very deep connection with Notts County. It’s like how twins say they can feel when the other is in pain, even if they’re far apart
That’s where we are with Notts County these days. We didn’t see this NCFC #WPIOOTBGW live, but we felt it

NEW: Senior government figures are discussing whether to reverse the controversial winter fuel policy within weeks.
Any announcement could coincide with the spending review next month although the talks are fluid and have not yet reached a conclusion. It could involve adjusting the threshold or abandoning the policy altogether.
Follows Rachel Reeves telling Newscast yesterday that "we are a government that listens" and reports from others of similar talks
