I don’t like those AI apps that tell you where to drive for the best route. Too often they take me down tiny roads and ignore roads closed. However: yesterday one took us to the wrong car park in #Pollok Park, west #Glasgow. And we got this view. So maybe must reconsider.

The Black Sea will be safe again. Two F-16 from the Romanian Air Force shot down two aerial drones that entered our airspace without authorization over the Black Sea. The military informed that the first drone entered the national airspace at 17:59 and was shot down within 2 minutes, 25km SE of Sulina. The second drone, in the same area, was engaged and shot down at 18:05, 4 minutes after entering the national airspace, 20km E of Sulina. The Black Sea serves as a critical maritime artery for the global export of grain, energy resources, and industrial commodities, making its stability vital to international food and energy security. We have briefed our Allies and EU partners. Our military has prepared for an increased intensity of hybrid interference and will continue to prioritize air defence and maritime security. At Romania’s initiative, we will have a dedicated meeting of the North Atlantic Council on Tuesday to discuss Black Sea defence and deterrence. Romania and Bulgaria are in close contact at all levels for increased coordination and accelerate operational steps towards the establishment of the EU Maritime Security Hub in the Black Sea. @vpetrova_mfa @MFABulgaria

Tomorrow in Berlin, Friedrich Merz opens the inaugural “Invest in Germany Conference” Having been UK Investment Minister and run these events, my top tip is that people don’t invest in countries they can’t get into, or out of. My pictures in 2026 from Munich, Stuttgart, Berlin

Learn something new eh from useful historians: for some reason it never occurred to me that the Dorobanți bit of Bucharest 🇷🇴 was named after soldiers rather than a person etc. But then of course I used to live in the aviators’ district so why shouldn’t it be.
A pair of Romanian dorobanţi ("foot soldiers" - reserve infantry) pose in a photography studio during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. They wear white blouses & pants, inspired by peasant costume, & traditional opinci (similar to moccasins). The fur caps have turkey feathers.

Visit, connect, invest yes but also walk. It’s where the @VTransilvanica starts - I did the first two stages in 2025. And the famous Vama Egg museum which I also went along to. And now @TimeOutTravel has noticed it too according to my Facebook feed (how coincidental) 🇷🇴
A pleasure to host the launch of Bucovina Connect at 1 Belgrave Square. An initiative showcasing Bucovina, a historic region of Romania, and fostering closer ties between Romania and the UK through tourism, business and investment. 🇷🇴🇬🇧

Just inland from Dubrovnik's walls lies Konavle, a valley of fields, stone villages and family-run konobas. 🍇 In 2026, European Best Destinations named Cavtat and Konavle the most elegant coastal destination in Europe, praised for their architecture, quiet luxury, and Mediterranean atmosphere. #CroatiaFullOfLife

Not somewhere that I ever managed to visit - but would like to!
I welcome the opening of the new international road border crossing point Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației on the Ukrainian-Romanian border on October 8th 🇺🇦🇷🇴 This was made possible by consistent and focused efforts on both sides. Completing the necessary steps, including the legal agreements and preparatory works, was on the agenda of our bilateral dialogue at the level of presidents, prime ministers, and foreign ministers. Thanks to such joint efforts and smooth coordination between the relevant authorities and local governments, we have delivered this major infrastructure improvement. More such projects are next in line. The new crossing point creates conditions for stronger cross-border cooperation, closer trade and economic ties, better transport links and more people-to-people contacts. Together, these contribute to the prosperity and good-neighbourly relations of our countries. Ukraine highly values its constructive cooperation with Romania. I am grateful to my colleague @oana_toiu for our joint work and reaffirm our readiness to keep developing border infrastructure, strengthening transport connectivity and deepening the Ukrainian-Romanian strategic partnership.

Ait Ben Haddou. If you know, you know @PetronellaWyatt - go visit!
“Can you forgive me?” “That I can.” Michael Caine and Sean Connery are done for in John Huston’s “The Man who would be King” (1975). Based on Rudyard Kipling’s novella, both actors said it was their favourite film. They were fortunate to appear in it. Huston had planned to make the film since the 1950s, with Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart in the roles of Danny and Peachy, but both actors died. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas were then approached, but turned the film down. In the 1970s, Huston offered the parts to Robert Redford and Paul Newman, but Newman argued that British actors should be cast and it was he who recommended Connery and Caine. The role of Rudyard Kipling was played by the great Christopher Plummer.

I strongly condemn the attacks targeting civilian and commercial vessels in the Black Sea. Such attacks are unacceptable and further undermine regional security and the safety of navigation. Croatia stands in full solidarity with Bulgaria, as well as with Romania and Türkiye, and reaffirms its commitment to freedom of navigation and safe and secure shipping. @MFABulgaria @MAERomania @MFATurkiye

Excellent news for 🇹🇩 and #Rezolv, a company I got to know in 🇷🇴 when posted there, job being helping to promote 🇬🇧 investment. Took them to meet key players such as @tianu among others. Now they’re well ensconced in the renewables sector @PufuOvidiu @laurapopescumfa

The Tartan Army are famous for their big hearts and friendly fans. As 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 football team faces 🇲🇰 in the UEFA Nations League, Scottish charities Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal and Tartan Army Childrens' Charity showed that spirit by generously supporting local charities and communities in Skopje and Kochani. Chargé d’Affaires Daniel Fieller attended a performance by Roma Rock School in Skopje, celebrating the creativity and talent of young people, while Defence Attaché Lt Col Denise McMahon joined an event supporting FK Fudbal Stars in Kochani. From music and football to supporting vulnerable communities, the Tartan Army is bringing friendship, solidarity and community spirit to 🇲🇰.
