I want you all to know this.
There are 650 MPs in Parliament. Yet the one MP chosen by @UKLabour to Chair the Bill Committee for the controversial, dangerous and dismally bad draft legislation, the Conversion Practices Bill, is Alex Barros-Curtis. Until July 2024, when Alex was given a very safe Labour seat in Cardiff, he was the Head of the Labour Party's Governance and Legal Unit in London. This was a department set up to investigate complaints against members of the Labour Party. Complaints of antisemitism, Islamophobia, abuse, and of course latterly, mostly women holding legally-protected 'Gender Critical' (sex realist) beliefs. Alex oversaw the investigation of hundreds of members who liked or tweeted gender critical or feminist views. I was one of them. He investigated me, as a sitting Labour MP, for 13 months.
13 months to 'investigate' one like of one tweet. I had a great lawyer, one of the names we're all now familiar with, and I had to crowdfund to pay for his (excellent) work.
They first tried in 2020. But the screenshots crudely attached to that passive aggressive, threatening-sounding email from LP admin staff were so risible that I replied that it was too ridiculous for me to waste my precious time on. They left it. Years of Starmer bumbling and stuttering through interviews about whether he had spoken to me, whether he supported me, etc followed. My feminist sins continued apace.
And then I 'liked' a tweet by my GC comedian friend @Glinner. He had mocked Eddie'Suzy' for comparing his choice to wear traditional women's clothing, fake plastic breasts and nails, to those being persecuted by the Nazis during WWII. I found his sarcasm, as a award-winning comedy writer in the face of such offensive narcissism amusing and so 'liked' it. I found it absurd and obscene that Izzard, an extremely privileged and wealthy man, who openly changed his 'gender' at will, should write himself into history falseley as someone who would have been oppressed due to a circumstance beyond his control. We all know the groups who were tortured, starved and killed...
There is obviously more to my story, I will tell it all, it's just one chapter of the years of spiteful abusive and bullying practices meted out to me by the Labour Party managers. Not those who'd achieved office on merit, or even unexpectedly, but those in the club, often having failed to be elected themselves.
So Barros-Curtis who we were repeatedly told led 'the many *independent* inquiries into women members and MPs like me, now often stands as a trans-rights activist on the Labour backbenches. He has also been gifted the role of Chair of this Committee and is a huge supporter of this Bill. And I am not a part of the Bill Committee, although plenty of TRA MPs are. Does that sound like the democratic scrutiny of legislation to you?
I see Mr Pastry is trending here but how many of us remember watching him on black and white telly? Usually covered in flour. Like the original Sooty. Who remembers him? #MrPastry
Just realised that John Cleese is 87 today! This man, love him or hate him has, with his observational humour on British life has informed what many of us of a certain age have become today. Many now leading the nation in large and small ways. Happy birthday John. #r4today
They are doing it again. The sports slot has escaped!! Footy talk outside it! Well BBC, what do have to say? #r4today
I am hearing about the scrapping of standing charges on gas. But what about us that live in villages with no gas? Yes, they do exist! We have to rely on electric heating (or oil or wood burning) and there's no scrapping of electrcity standing charges! #r4today
I see footy has escaped from the sports slot yet again. Reminder to the BBC: probably most of us listening couldn't care less about football! #r4today

The voice that launched a thousand skits speaks up for @BBCRadio4Extra, which @BBC is axing.
Bad news: the BBC is set to scrap Radio 4 Extra. 📻 Losing this treasure trove of classic comedy, archive drama, and timeless storytelling would be a huge blow for millions of us.

4 Extra is my default listening, burbling away in the background, with my full attention, or anywhere in between. The BBC is leaving me, not the other way round.

On 22nd September 1934 at Gresford Colliery, Wales, an explosion killed 266 men & boys underground. 6 survived and only 11 bodies were ever recovered.
The wages of all were docked by half a days pay by the owners because the men had 'failed to complete their shift.'

@BBCRadio4Extra is my go to. Always find some vintage nugget from The Clitheroe Kid to a lost Hancock to Paul Temple. Yes, I could search thru the clunky archive, but half the joy is the surprise of the find.

This is on you, MAGA.
This dead child is on you.
Oh, you’ll bluster and talk trash, but your Dear Leader Trump serves with the murderers in Moscow.
I’d tell you to feel shame, but your souls are so dead you’ll laugh it off.
A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children.
I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.

But how much does Radio 4 Extra actually cost to run? Surely it almost exclusively broadcasts archive material?

Nooooo.... not #Radio4Xtra - we listen to that all the time in the wife's car 📷
VERY disappointed BBC, first you kill all the real LOCAL programming, now this.
No real point in paying a licence fee anymore in my opinion.

In my opinion, we're going to lose something incredibly valuable to the cultural fabric & history of this country. If Radio 4 Extra with its carefully curated archive isn't the epitome of public service broadcasting, well, I don't know what is. Only the BBC can do it. A sad day.

I’m very disappointed to hear that BBC 3 & Radio 4 Extra are to shut down.
Radio 4 Extra is particularly sad, I first heard the wonderful ‘Paul Temple’ series on there, when it was still Radio 7!
I now listen to Paul Temple every day! (Even though I know all the stories!)
#r4today A peaceful sovereign country, Ukraine was invaded by Russia. They fought back and several years later are winning the war. Despite lack of much needed air support from the West. They are a resourceful and highly intelligent people. Unlike corrupt Russians. #slavaUkraine
