I hope those involved in the Scottish Curriculum Improvement Cycle take inspiration from this for Early Years. 😍 @olliebray

Northern Ireland has issued this guidance banning "three-cueing", but it forms the basis of Scotland's most popular literacy programme "Active Literacy". Who is right, Scotland or Northern Ireland?
🎥WATCH | Over 500 school leaders, teachers, researchers and policymakers attended the #TransformED Literacy Symposium today. The event focused on the science of reading and the importance of evidence‑based practice. Education Minister, Paul Givan also launched a new literacy framework for primary schools aimed at strengthening literacy practice across Northern Ireland. The more I read about reading instruction, the clearer it becomes: treating whole words as the starting point ignores how alphabetic writing actually works. Children don’t benefit from memorising word shapes; they benefit from understanding how letters represent sounds. Orthographic knowledge and rapid word recognition come after secure decoding, not instead of it. If we want genuinely confident readers, we need to teach the code explicitly and systematically, then let fluency build through meaningful practice.

FWIW I don’t think the relatively modest recent curricular reforms are anything like an endorsement on the catastrophic Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. The CfE trashed the bounty of a knowledge rich school experience and replaced it with horrendously vague ‘competencies’. It was, and is, a disaster, and I wish its defenders would stop trying to put lipstick on it thetimes.com/uk/education/ar…

It's quite remarkable that in a single year, a journalist can acquire a better understanding of the science of reading than @EstynHMI, who, in the 20 years since Rose Report was commissioned, still don't get it? @WG_Education @AddysgEducation itv.com/news/2025-11-06/ques…

Repeatedly telling Scottish pupils over the year that exams don't matter and and that there are no wrong paths is the very definition of the bigotry of low expectations.

The ghost of Reading Recovery continues to haunt every Scottish Primary School that uses "Active Literacy".
Surely this comprehensive and damning paper is the final nail in Reading Recovery’s coffin.

🚨 Fantastic new episode is here! England reversed its academic decline—and now ranks 4th in reading on PIRLS and highest-performing non-Asian country on TIMSS. Former Minister @NickGibbUK shares how evidence-based reforms in reading & math made it happen. Link below ⬇️

A totally toxic convoluted mess... children end up looking everywhere except where they need to... all the 'clues' they need are right there in the letters in front of them on the page... a recipe for practising and consolidating confusion.

"The Reading Recovery level is useful to consider when selecting texts for pupils who are struggling readers. It indicates fine increments of progression between texts." - from "Active Literacy", Scotland's most popular Literacy programme.
