A free press cannot function under threat. The NWMI stands in solidarity with our journalist colleagues who faced aggressive behaviour by police personnel while carrying out their professional duties.

My Salaams, respect and deep gratitude to all the lawyers, mostly younger members of the Bar, who are every evening and late into the night ensuring the release of all peaceful protesters from illegal detention by Delhi Police, from far flung corners of the city. You stand between the Police State and constitutional guarantees. You are the true legal heroes who are keeping the flame of fundamental rights and freedoms alive. The commitment of the younger members of the Bar is inspirational.
Important story from @SravastiDasgup2 coming up soon. @mrajshekhar was also here - he is back home now. Unrelated Fun-fact: Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina had infamous secret prisons called Ayna ghar (house of mirrors) where dissenters were held and kept.

This photo by Raju Shinde of @HTMumbai is heartbreaking, angering and iconic. I don’t know if on the next day, HT carried it as the lead image on Pg One but if I were there, this one was a no brainier. #photojournalism #CJPprotest #Mumbaiprotest #HindustanTimes

Manhandled, dragged, assaulted n misbehaved inside a police vehicle and dumped by the roadside - for the crime of speaking to the media. This is not merely an assault on an MP. It is an assault on democratic freedoms and the rule of law. More chillingly, it happened within hours of the Supreme Court issuing directions to safeguard peaceful protest and constitutional rights. I have written to the Hon’ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn , the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha @VPIndia and the Chief Justice of India seeking urgent intervention and fixing accountability for the police personnel, and action on the question of parliamentary privilege. The Government cannot intimidate democracy into silence. It cannot substitute the force of the baton for the force of debate. And it shouldn’t expect the people to surrender their constitutional freedoms merely because those in power find dissent inconvenient. The strength of a democracy lies not in its capacity to suppress dissent, but in its ability to address it.

Just shortly after they forcibly dragged @JohnBrittas away. This is Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi - just metres away from Jantar Mantar. @IRFANfromSlums was there - hear what he says. More up on @thewire_in - follow the news there and the ridiculous situation in Delhi👇🏾

This is a great time to remember that the the Supreme Court has kept the batch of matters relating to illegal hacking software like Pegasus pending in what @gautambhatia88 has beautifully called the “Doctrine of Judicial Evasion”. It has not even provided the independent reports it was responsible for on the use of such software to the public as yet. So despite a judgement that says that such software is essential unconstitutional- the government has happily continued to do whatever it pleases. People like @apar1984 @internetfreedom @tame_wildcard @pranesh @pbhushan1 and many others have repeatedly called attention to this- but in keeping with Bhatia’s thesis the Court has been happy to let sleeping dogs lie.
Our phones have most probably been hacked. It has happened in the past. It is very likely that it has happened again, with us.

Justice Bagchi delivered a lot of English this morning in court. After that an MP is roughed up by police while peacefully interacting with media. If judiciary has any shame left, a Bench should assemble immediately and initiate suo motu penal action against the Commissioner of Police.

Madam, with due respect, please don’t give false hopes about these non-orders. You all know how shallow they are. Instead, you should be educating people about how such utterances are repeatedly observed in contempt and how the judiciary prefers to stay silent when it needs to act.

Connaught Place right now. The sheer scale of the police & security personnel is staggering. The scenes are increasingly difficult to describe. No words. Even the few shopkeepers who had opened up today are shuttering. One said, “What is going on? This is too much.”
