Individualism & Egalitarianism: It is the individual—not the tribe, not the family, not the society—who has the capacity to explain the world, to understand it, to suffer, to be happy, to make choices, to create explanatory knowledge. This kind of individualism is a devastating criticism of every collectivistic idea past and present—collective justice, guilt by blood, racism, classism, and policies intended to help a ‘community’ as defined by the set of all individuals with a particular characteristic. Moreover, there is only one kind of individual—any person is as capable of making progress, experiencing any physically possible qualia, and generating knowledge as any other. It is in this sense that egalitarianism is true. People are not equal in terms of skill, interest, genes, phenotype, wealth, opportunity, nor life experience. But people are equal with respect to their ability to generate new knowledge and continuously solve the endless stream of problems that defines their lives. Indeed, knowledge creation is the most egalitarian enterprise in existence.

Einstein was right: the universe is local after all. Conjecture Institute Fellow @PaulRRobichaud proved that quantum theory, and any reversible theory without faster-than-light signaling, is local-realistic. No spooky action required.

Seeing, doing, imagining. Conjecture Institute Advisor @yudapearl's Ladder of Causation explains why correlations alone can’t tell you what happens when you act, and why answering “what if?” takes more than data.

Antizionism is the idea that Israel is a second-class state and has no right to exist. Zionophobia is simply the irrational, obsessive resistance to the idea of Jewish self-rule anywhere in the Middle East. ~Conjecture Institute Advisor @yudapearl

The Pythagoreans said, “All is number.” Conjecture Institute Fellow @Sam_kuyp updates it for the quantum age: All is q-number. By taking quantum mechanics seriously as a fundamental theory of Nature, Sam's views differ from the mainstream in at least four ways. 👇

The STEM/Humanities divide is killing us. Wonderism is the cure. I conjecture that the divide between the two cultures of the sciences and the humanities is the cause of modern stagnation, disenchantment, "the meaning crisis", and doomerism. If there's a spiritual disconnect between your intellect and your emotion, it's impossible not to feel disenchanted. People who are in STEM think about the material and the worldly, while people who are in the humanities think about the spiritual and the meaningful. There's very little cross-communication between the two. It leads to a desolation of the discourse. So what is the solution? It is Wonderism. ~Conejcture Institute Fellow @tomhyde_

300 years of capitalism created more wealth than 300,000 years of nature’s slavery over man. But some still dream of going back to being hunter-gatherers and dividing poverty among the tribe. ~Conjecture Institute Fellow @arjunkhemani

The Copenhagen interpretation has historically been a widely accepted interpretation of quantum mechanics. However, due to its vagueness and its inability to solve the measurement problem, a range of alternative interpretations have since been proposed and developed. These include the Everettian many-worlds interpretation, dynamical collapse theories, and Bohmian mechanics. The many-worlds interpretation, which could solve the measurement problem without adding extra structure to quantum theory, is sometimes accused of untestability, absurdity, experimental inaccessibility, vagueness, and internal inconsistency. Here, I argue that those faults are at least as (or more) prevalent in the Copenhagen interpretation as in the many-worlds interpretation. Furthermore, I use the Copenhagen interpretation as a toy model to exemplify some features of an untestable theory. The conclusion is that, contrary to the still widespread belief among many in the scientific community, the Copenhagen interpretation has no place as an option when discussing current interpretations of quantum mechanics. Rather, it serves as an instructive historical example of a theory that cannot be experimentally tested against alternatives, suffering from the very flaws that are often (and sometimes wrongly) attributed to its many-worlds rival. ~Conjecture Institute Fellow @maria__violaris, Bold Conjectures, Volume II: Essays Across Physics

A set of computations that, composed with one another, permit one to recover the whole set of possible computations in the repertoire of the universal computer is called a ‘universal set’. When there is a universal set, any computation is reducible to a sequence of elementary computations selected from the universal set. These elementary computations are, in this respect, a bit like LEGO bricks: anything that is allowed in a LEGO world (from cars, to villas, to pirate ships) can be decomposed into elementary LEGO bricks of a few elementary different kinds, whose basic composition rules are fixed. Likewise, when there is a universal set, any physically allowed computation can be decomposed into a set of elementary computations from the universal set, sometimes referred to as ‘gates’, which can be composed according to fixed laws. When the laws of physics say that a universal set of computations is possible, we say that they display ‘universality’. Universality is a counterfactual property (about what is possible), and it has sweeping consequences: it is universality that permits the existence of a universal computer, like the ones we use nowadays. ~Conjecture Institute Senior Scientist Chiara Marletto, The Science of Can and Can't
