Ending AIDS remains possible. We know how to do it. But it will require countries to stand together, protect what works, and keep communities at the centre.

Inequality drives AIDS. Nearly two-thirds of new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa are among women and girls. Not because of biology, but because of unequal power, discrimination and violence. The same is true for many marginalized communities.
This is not inevitable. We must end the stigma, discrimination, and criminalization that stops people from accessing health services and their rights.

A critical finding from the Global Council on Inequality, AIDS and Pandemics should guide us as we innovate for health: if we want to move successfully from crisis to resilience, we must rethink how we measure pandemic preparedness.
Inequality drives pandemics, and pandemics deepen inequality.
Unless we break this inequality–pandemics cycle, we will keep moving from one crisis to the next.

Science alone will not deliver health for all. The AIDS response showed that breakthroughs only save lives when people can access them. Access to HIV medicines was not just a scientific achievement, but a political victory.
Delivering health for all requires more than innovation.
It requires people organizing, challenging unequal systems and changing the rules that stand in the way of access.

COVID exposed the same fault lines. Vaccines were developed at record speed. The science was there. The resources were there.
What was missing was the will to share the benefits of science.

Thank you @UNITAID for bringing cPAP to several countries. What will it take to scale up bCPAP, a lifesaving technology, to all lower and middle income countries?
For premature babies struggling to breathe, bCPAP uses a gentle flow of pressurised air and #oxygen to help keep their lungs open. With support from @UNITAID, @Vayu_Health is bringing this simple technology to hospitals in Kenya, India, Brazil and Ukraine. ow.ly/NG7850ZSAZW

At #UNGA81 in New York, the Government of Benin 🇧🇯 (@gouvbenin) signed a new €544,000 contribution to support UNAIDS’ work in the country in 2026–2027.
At a time when international financing for health and development is under pressure, this contribution demonstrates Benin’s national leadership and commitment to sustaining progress against HIV.
The investment will strengthen UNAIDS’ work in Benin, including data and analysis, community engagement and coordination, helping ensure people can continue to access lifesaving HIV services and that the country remains on track towards ending AIDS by 2030.

At the UNAIDS transformation event on the sidelines of #UNGA81, Keren Dunaway @ngopcb, reflects on the progress made and the role of communities, activism and UNAIDS in steering that progress.
As the UNAIDS Joint Programme transforms, communities must remain at the centre. Keren calls on Member States and partners to match political commitment with predictable, sustained financing, support a transformed Joint Programme and protect the multisectoral HIV response.
Because the HIV response has shown that communities are not just beneficiaries. They are leaders, partners and essential to delivering and sustaining the response.
At #UNGA81, governments, communities, UN leaders and global health partners gathered to discuss the transformation of the Joint UN Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) and what is needed to sustain progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The discussion comes as the UN undergoes major reforms and the global health landscape is changing, with countries facing constrained financing, widening inequalities and growing pressure on health systems.
For UNAIDS Executive Director @Winnie_Byanyima, transformation is about strengthening country ownership: “Ultimately, transformation is not only about integrating UNAIDS into the UN system, it’s about integrating the AIDS response into stronger national institutions.”
Botswana’s Minister of Health Stephen Modise, reflected on what the HIV response has achieved through political leadership, communities, science and partnership.
“Our journey has shown what is possible when political leadership, communities, science, and partnership come together with common purpose and coordinated support. We would not have reached this point without the Joint Programme.”
As UNAIDS transforms, participants highlighted the importance of preserving the functions that have helped drive progress: political leadership, coordination, accountability, community engagement and support to countries.
The message was clear: transformation must help sustain the gains of the HIV response and support countries and communities to finish the job of ending AIDS.

From #UNGA81, UNAIDS Executive Director @Winnie_Byanyima saw strong signs of solidarity and leadership to keep working together to end AIDS.
UNAIDS brought African leaders, Ministers of Health, industry and civil society together to advance health sovereignty through local production of medicines for HIV and other pandemics and to identify concrete opportunities to move this work forward.
She also highlighted strong support for the continuation and transformation of the UNAIDS Joint Programme, and the growing role of countries in sustaining the HIV response, including Benin’s new contribution to support UNAIDS work in the country.
Multilateralism may be under pressure, but it is alive. And there are many forces working to strengthen it and solve global challenges together.

Just months ago, 149 countries came together to adopt a Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS, committing to prioritize children, remove stigma and discrimination, and ensure communities are resourced to deliver the HIV response.
Now, the focus is on turning those commitments into action — so countries and communities can continue delivering for people living with and affected by HIV, and ultimately ensure children benefit.
