All of the commissioners on the California Energy Commission were appointed or reappointed by Governor Gavin Newsom. Since they all voted in favor of drastically reducing the types of car tires allowed to be sold in California, we reached out yesterday to Governor Newsom's office to see if he agreed with the decision. We also reached out to the campaigns of gubernatorial candidates Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra. Here's how they responded (or didn't):
Newsom: Praised the commission's decision
Hilton: Blasted the commission's decision
Becerra: Didn't respond

In video below from an unrelated news conference in Hayward today, Newsom said in answer to a question that the board's decision "... was a good choice." You can see his entire answer in the video below.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Hilton sent us this statement:
“Steve Hilton’s position is simple: stop making California more expensive. The Energy Commission admits this mandate will raise the upfront cost of tires. When working families need to buy four tires, they can’t pay the tire shop with a promise of savings years from now. This is the same Sacramento mentality we’ve seen for years: ideology first, affordability last. Stop making it worse.” Hector Barajas, spokesman for Hilton for Governor

Today, California's already highest in the nation excise tax on gasoline increases to 63.4 cents per gallon. And if you live in LA County, the tax you pay on that tax will also soon be on the rise. ⬇️

The temperature blind spot. The temperature inside the chemical tank in Garden Grove was at least 100° when firefighters checked it last night. The problem is 100 is as high as the temperature gauge on the tank goes so they don’t know how hot it actually is. – at Garden Grove, CA
