France’s global mega-water companies: Suez, Ondeo, and Saur, control almost half of the world’s $400 billion water market and are now feasting on Libya. America toppled Assad in Syria partly because Syria’s Golan Heights controlled 40% of Israel’s water supply. Today, the real tipping point of the Iran war would be if the desalination plants across the Gulf were attacked. If those plants go down, so do the Gulf monarchies, and with them the petrodollar system that has long underpinned American power.

Iran has destroyed $4 billion worth of America’s advanced radar systems in the Middle East. Iran has now exposed the weakness in that arrangement: Washington cannot fully protect the Gulf. Desalination plants are notoriously easy to hit and difficult to defend, because their components are sprawling across geographic area and their pipes, intakes and power systems are exposed and an easy target for cheap drones. The key indicator of whether we will descend into World War 3 is not the rising oil price, it’s the state of Gulf and Israeli water desalination plants. The one thing Gulf monarchies fear more than investors fleeing is citizens rising up. Unlike oil, there are no substitutes, alternatives or stopgaps for water. Water scarcity does not just mean thirsty citizens. It shuts down power generation, food supply chains, tourism, construction, and public health systems. Influencers can claim that Dubai is safe even though drones fly overhead. But when water begins to be scarce and airports are closed it’s game over. The illusion evaporates like a mirage in the desert. Israel wants to drag the world into a world war and so it will escalate and inevitably strike Iran’s water supply. The Gulf Monarchies will not survive Iran’s retaliation. Neither will Trump, because without the Gulf Monarchies, the petrodollar era will come to an end. Trump’s war on Iran will go down in history as the beginning of the end of America’s Empire.
