To recognise #WorldPatientSafteyDay, we’re highlighting the ChEETAH trial by @NIHR_GSU
This found that changing gloves and instruments reduced the risk of surgical site infections, improving the safety of surgery for patients in #LMICs

ALT World Patient Safety Day - 17 September 2024 The ChEETAh trial was run in Benin, Ghana, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa. The study recruited 12,200 patients who needed abdominal surgery. They showed that routine glove and instrument changing reduced infection rates across a range of surgical settings, improving surgical outcomes for patients.

Dust has finally settled and I've recovered from our amazing 2023 meeting (350 people f2f, 1K online). Huge team effort to deliver, thanks guys. I think we had a diverse and young frontline, and some amazing posters from across the NHS.

Call to Action:
1. We've formed a new worldwide community – convene and grow that community, build new projects and experts
2. Take personal action now – look at your bank (Monzo), use an electric vehicles, check your energy supplier (Octopus), reduce your beef consumption, check your travel
3. Take professional action tomorrow– change your day to day practice, open only what you need, reduce your energy use, surgical teams - stop opening gowns to stay warm!!
4. Research action: (i) DragonRCT – take part if you can influence your theatre; (ii) anaesthetists for nitrous project, (iii) sustainable recycling from Ors
5. Join a project to introduce clean and reliable energy and water across district hospitals in the Global South
6. Bookmark our Second meeting early December 2024 – probably focussed on energy use across the whole patient pathway from supplier to solar to practioner
Needs
-a course on basic carbon literacy for healthcare professionals
-expand behavioural change technique training

For the implementation of CHEETAH, two administratives memos have been issued by the CHUDOP hospital in Porto Novo requiring operating room staff to change their gloves and instruments before closing the abdominal incision, and to use the surgical checklist during all operations.
