Four turtles. Four players. An instant argument over who gets Donatello.
TMNT made being a fan something you could do together. That's a hell of a design brief for an arcade game: give people a reason to bring someone along.

Did you know this was Konami’s highest-earning arcade title ever? EVER!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989), developed and published by Konami, is based on the popular 1987 animated series.
You and up to three friends can simultaneously control Leonardo (katanas), Raphael (sais), Michelangelo (nunchakus), or Donatello (bo staff), each with unique stats like attack range and speed.
You fight thugs and bosses to rescue April and Splinter from Shredder and Krang. Not the most complex story ever... but rather typical for beat 'em ups.
A standout feature was the cooperative four-player mode, with players standing side by side at the massive cabinet, each with their own control panel. The cabinet's sheer size and instantly recognizable theme song always stood out, even in a crowded arcade.
Genius concept by the way. The "peer pressure" to insert another coin to rejoin when you died (and your friends were still playing) was real.
This is reward design done right. Beat Cossack's Castle and the game hands you a hidden orchestral track. No fanfare, just a great surprise waiting for the player who earned it. Small rewards like this can turn completion into a memory.

The Mega Man Anniversary Collection has a very unique version of the Blues Theme as one of the hidden tracks.
You unlock this lovely orchestral arrangement by completing Cossack's Castle in 4.
Sweeping strings and a shimmering percussion lead the synth melody onward #RetroGaming

Street Fighter turned its movie trailer into a game on YouTube. You land combos along with the fights. That's pretty damn cool. Give the arcade crowd something to play and suddenly the ad is an attraction of its own. #StreetFighter #ArcadeGames
Street Fighter began in the arcade, but the characters became bigger than the cabinet. That is what durable game IP can do: the gameplay earns the fans, then the world gives the brand somewhere else to go. #StreetFighter #ArcadeGames #GamingIP
35 years later, The Simpsons Arcade Game shows what licensed arcade games get right: IP is not decoration. The characters, comedy and chaos are the game. That is the difference between putting a logo on a cabinet and turning a brand into an experience. #ArcadeGames #RetroGaming
Realism is not always the goal. The winning look is the one players recognize in half a second. High saturation and clouds give this game a point of view, and in a crowded market, a clear identity does more work than another layer of polish. #GameDesign #ArcadeGames
Challenge Cards are a smart way to make old games feel active again. You don’t always need more content to earn another play. Sometimes you just need a clear goal and a little proof you pulled it off.

Crossovers can buy attention. They can’t buy fit. Arknights x Persona 3 Reload works because neither world looks pasted onto the other. That is the licensing job: the logo gets the click, but the experience still has to earn the play. #Arknights #Persona3Reload #GamingCollab
Three months on one cosplay is serious commitment. The strongest communities give fans room to create, not just consume. Studios can buy reach, but this kind of attachment has to be earned.

Coin-Op Chaos is a reminder that updates don’t need more complexity. Lives add stakes. Scores set goals. Rankings build rivalry. Drop-in co-op removes friction. Arcade mechanics still work when they give players a reason to run it back. #ScottPilgrimEX #ArcadeGames #GameDesign

This is a small detail with a big product lesson. Players value rewards more when they can see the path to earning them. The car is the prize, but skill progression is what makes it satisfying. That principle applies well beyond GTA. #GTA6 #GameDesign #PlayerExperience
I loved Marble Madness as a kid, and this video brought me right back. The goal makes sense in seconds, but the physics allow for continuous improvement and replayability. That balance is why the format still works. Brilliant job. #RetroGaming #IndieGames #gamedev
The smart part of Volvy is that the product and the marketing are the same joke. A $4.99 price makes curiosity cheap, while the intentionally absurd backstory gives people something to share before they ever play. That is tight positioning. #IndieGames #gamedev

The fact that this pairing sounds a little strange is probably an advantage. It gets people curious. Now the hard part is giving both fanbases something fun enough that the crossover feels earned.

This is how you make a convention booth feel like part of the game. Demo, card swipe, photo op, collectible pin, merch. Each piece gives fans a different reason to stop, participate and remember the brand. Smart experiential marketing. #PAXWest #AmongUs #GameDesign

The eight-player local multiplayer is what caught my eye. One interested player can turn into a full group session. Five modes across 15 arenas give that group variety from the start. That is a smart way to design and launch a party game. #ArcadeGames #IndieGames #GameDesign
Bringing iRacing Arcade to more platforms is great. Adding new cars, tracks and split-screen at the same time is better. A port reaches a new audience. A stronger product gives them a reason to care. That is smart launch planning. #ArcadeGames #RacingGames #GameDesign
Golden Axe is taking arcade IP to television. At Cheenko, we take brand IP in the other direction, turning it into games people want to replay. Good licensing can move both ways, giving fans new ways to enjoy the brands they love. #GoldenAxe #ArcadeGames #RetroGaming
Paramount+ has revealed a first-look at Golden Axe, an animated series adaptation of SEGA's iconic arcade game: bit.ly/45z0QLs
A 60-second game has nowhere to hide. The hook has to land fast, the rules have to make sense, and the ending has to make you want another run. That is arcade design. #GameDesign #ArcadeGames #IndieGames

Five storefronts is serious reach. But distribution only opens the door. The real test is giving players reasons to come back. At Cheenko, we think about that balance every day: easy access, strong replay, real player value. #IndieGames #Gaming #GameDev
