ALT 924 • Checker Taxi A century-old image of a Model E (1924) Checker Taxi cab photographed along 102A Avenue between 100 & 101 Street with the former Land Titles Building (1912) in the background. The Checker Cab Co. was operated by Edmonton's big transer outfit at the time, Twin City. 1924 was the first full year of production at the new Kalamazoo plant location for Checker Cab Manufacturing Corporation. It was also the first year that Checker participated in several car conventions that focused on taxi operators (e.g. New York and Chigaco). Although not as iconic as the 1959–82 Checker A series sedans, the brand's signature checkerboard trim to the vehicle's beltline still dates back to this period. The pattern is credited to the Morris Markin who founded the company in 1922.
