My great-grandma just turned 104 this week. Born in Alabama in 1922, she lived through legalized segregation and recently shared those memories with me. She’s witnessed over a century of American history, from injustice to progress, heartbreak to hope. She’s seen the best and the worst this country has had to offer. That’s why, when I think of America, I think of her. She’s proof that our history isn’t just found in textbooks. Sometimes it’s sitting across the table, telling stories only a century of living can tell.
