Yesterday at the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association (SCRPA) Annual Conference in Greenville, two members of the Charleston County Parks team were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the parks and recreation profession. Outdoor Adventure Program Manager Ande Oliver (left) received the 2026 SCRPA District Merit Award, recognizing professionals who make a meaningful impact in their field. Each of SCRPA’s four districts selects a merit award recipient, with those honorees advancing for consideration for the statewide State Merit Award. Director of Parks Eric Stewart (right) was named SCRPA Professional of the Year, an honor recognizing members with at least 15 years in the profession who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to parks and recreation. The award celebrates the leadership, experience, and dedication that help strengthen the profession and the communities it serves. These honors reflect the commitment, expertise and passion that parks and recreation professionals bring to their work every day. Please join us in congratulating Ande and Eric on these well-deserved recognitions!

Hundreds of millions of birds pass through South Carolina during the fall, which makes the Lowcountry not simply a place where birds happen to pass overhead, but an important stop along a much larger journey southward. The mixture of travelers and new winter residents is part of what makes a morning at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center so special.
