Anita Archer is such an inspiration! I love hearing her speak about what makes good, evidence-informed, teaching. This episode does not disappoint! Clear and useful information for teachers 👍. Her “Archerisms” are sort of like my educational mantras.
New episode! Anita Archer has shaped how generations of educators think about explicit instruction. In this conversation, we discuss the principles and instructional routines that consistently help students succeed. Listen here: educationrickshaw.com/2026/0…

New article on how to teach vocabulary explicitly. Thanks @MrZachG for the amazing recent podcast episodes with @smorrisey and Anita Archer which inspired me to write this and heavily influenced the scripted lesson example I’ve included. edulore.substack.com/p/the-b…

Mississippi proud!
Replicate, replicate, replicate! This could be a huge win for representative government and informed citizens. There's an established solution. I wrote about this for @NRO's America 250 edition: nationalreview.com/magazine/…

Worth reading. Worth talking about. Because the children are worth it!
There is more and more evidence that putting computers and tablets on students' desks (1:1 devices) was a terrible mistake. I agree with @AdamMGrant that "it's time to remove laptops [and tablets] from classrooms."

And because children do not learn by osmosis, it works!
Replying to @MrZachG
DI’s genius was uniting delivery and design into an instructional system. The ultimate system, in my view, includes provisions for both the how and the what to teach—the whole puppy. That’s why capital-D, capital-I Direct Instruction remains just as relevant today. /End

Why is this surprising to so many? And why do we need studies to tell us this?
Today in "research confirming that grandma was right": Children who spend more time on phones scored lower on reading, vocabulary and memory tests. And the longer they scrolled, the worse the outcomes

“@NCTQ’s analysis revealed that 40% of teacher prep programs are still teaching two or more practices that are incompatible with scientifically based reading instruction. There is a spectrum of programs, from those that are fully aligned to scientifically based reading to those that are fully wedded to debunked reading methods. And there is variation—and confusion—in between. For example, we identified over 200 programs that teach at least three of the five core components of scientifically based reading instruction right alongside at least one contrary practice” @HeatherPeske @MissyPurcell @SoRclassroom @brett_tingley @KJWinEducation @Veggievangelist

Proud of Mississippi’s progress! Teaching reading to mastery. What a novel thought!!!😉.
Progressives: Noooooo! Students need dialogic, intersectional, critical pedagogy to decolonize their identities and money to close historio-cultural achievement gaps!!! Mississippi: But have you tried simply teaching them to read and holding them back if they can’t?
