I'm definitely not anti-achievement and never criticized real achievements, including by Elon.
I even own two Teslas.
I do expose marketing stunts that, while cool on the surface, are not the achievements they are claimed to be.
Compressed air thrusters might give you acceleration boosts in any direction.
They might even make your car hover for a couple of seconds if you accept replacing the passenger seat by a 400 liter high-pressure air tank.
But they are not a path to actual flying cars.
The same way Burt Rutan's SpaceshipOne was never going to be a path to orbital flights (just bunny hops out of the atmosphere).
I am anti-Musk when it comes to politics. His political actions, the massive dissemination of disinformation through X and other channels, and his support for authoritarian regimes and racist ideas have the effect of weakening democracy and weakening human decency and social progress around the world.

When Trump renames it "Huge Intelligence" ("huge" is one less syllable than "super"), they'll all start calling it "Huge Intelligence."
Eventually it'll be whittled down to "Big Smart" - or BS for short.

Elon Musk corrects himself: "I think it's worth highlighting the positive benefits of AI -- SI, pardon me. I think by far the most likely outcome is major abundance."

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has a surprising theory about the "confidence" behind great founders: it might not be confidence at all.
When the idea of confidence comes up, Bezos offers a different explanation:
"You say it's confidence, but maybe it's just trying to compensate for that... accepting that that's a human bias and trying to compensate against it."
So what is the bias?
"I think it's generally human nature to overestimate risk and underestimate opportunity."
Your instincts don't just make the risks look bigger than they are. They also make the opportunities look smaller than they are. Both errors push you in the same direction: toward doing less.
Bezos's correction:
"The risks are probably not as big as you perceive and the opportunities may be bigger than you perceive."
This is why he says entrepreneurs "would be well advised to try and bias against that piece of human nature."
Seen this way, the founder who looks fearless may not have a different personality from you.
They may simply have accepted that their instincts are tilted and learned to adjust for it on purpose. That's not a trait you're born with. It's a correction you can choose to make.
And if you don't make it, @JeffBezos warns there's a cost:
"Thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy."
Let the bias set your ambitions, and you'll get small results that seem to prove small was all that was possible.

- stála USA obrovské finanční a bezpečnostní náklady
- způsobila smrt tisíců civilistů a vojáků
- rozvrátila trh s ropou v Perském zálivu
- uvalila na celý svět uvalila nové a obří náklady na energie
- vyvolala riziko nové vlny inflace, zpomalila hospodářský růst ve světě a podnítila nové (nyní začínající) kolo zvyšování úrokových sazeb.

Here’s a list of Scott Bessent’s wrong predictions and/or promises that didn’t happen:
February 5, 2025: Long-term interest rates would come down as Trump’s economic policies took effect.
Spring 2025: The federal deficit would move toward 3% of GDP.
Spring 2025: Trump’s policies would produce roughly 3% sustained real GDP growth.
July 8, 2025: The U.S. would collect well over $300 billion in tariff revenue in 2025.
September 1, 2025: The Supreme Court would uphold Trump’s emergency tariffs.
September 7, 2025: The economy would see a “substantial acceleration” in Q4 2025.
December 7–16, 2025: 2025 would finish with 3% to 3.5% real GDP growth.
December 16, 2025: Inflation would see a substantial drop in the first six months of 2026.
February 20, 2026: The economy could grow at least 3.5% in 2026.
April 14, 2026: 2026 GDP growth could easily exceed 3% or 3.5%.
April 14, 2026: Core inflation was falling and the Federal Reserve would need to cut interest rates.
April 14, 2026: Trump’s tariffs could be restored to their previous levels by the beginning of July.
June 2026: Again maintained that 2026 growth could reach roughly 3% to 3.5%.
2025–26: Lower energy prices, fiscal restraint and Trump’s policies would bring down long-term Treasury yields.
2025–26: Faster growth and tariff revenue would materially improve the federal deficit.
And now we get to track this one:
September 5, 2026: Oil could eventually fall to $40–$50 per barrel after the Iran war ends. The economy is now “in the liftoff phase.”

I would try to figure out why LLMs can write my essays but not clean my bedroom.
Then I would study topics in college and grad school that could help solve that problem.
I'll figure out a set of methods and architectures beyond LLMs that can quickly learn to perform physical tasks as efficiently as humans and animals.
That last item is also what I would if I were 30, 40, 50, or 66 years old 😉

Some European countries do have some dumb policies on air conditioning. But let's be clear: The main reason for low A/C penetration in Europe is that it wasn't that hot before. The hottest countries in Europe, not surprisingly, have the highest A/C penetration.
Europeans aren't stupid. They're just facing more intense heat than at any point in their history. Climate change is real.
Europeans are about 10x as likely to have A/C today as they were in 1990. And that is going to surge again as they face the reality of climate-change-powered heat waves summer after summer.

Last week I posted a new paper with Patrick Norrick: “Terra Incognita: The Economics of a Shrinking World.”
We chose the title deliberately. No society in history has experienced the fertility levels now seen in South Korea, China, Thailand, Colombia, Chile, and many other countries. Our knowledge of the causes (and of the economic consequences) remains far more limited than most public discussion acknowledges. Much of what we write is, at best, educated conjecture.
The paper also struggles against a space limit. We wrote 20,000 words, far from the 250,000 or so we would need to address some issues in more detail (if I had the time and resources to hide away for a year, I could do that, but not now). That means some ideas are only sketched.
Nonetheless, we emphasize several important points.
First, fertility has fallen very fast everywhere: rich and poor countries, east and west, north and south, conservative and liberal societies, religious and non-religious societies (with the exception of the Jewish population of Israel; fertility has also collapsed among the Muslim population within the pre-1967 borders), you name it. Even in sub-Saharan Africa we see fast and unprecedented drops in fertility (alas, from a high initial level).
Second, and this is really interesting, the fertility collapse has been concentrated in poor and lower-middle-income countries much more than in rich countries. By now, income per capita and fertility are positively correlated within OECD countries. We conjecture this will hold globally in a few decades.
Third, and related to the second point, the fertility collapse has been concentrated among poor and lower-middle-income women within countries. In countries such as the U.S., the rich and highly educated now have more children than the poor and less educated.
Fourth, we document why we do not understand the data from the U.N. World Population Prospects. See, for example, Tables A.1 and A.2.
Fifth, we explain why some proposed mechanisms struggle when confronted with the data.
A more subtle point is at work here. Many commentators do not seem to understand the difference between proximate causes and ultimate causes. Yes, births might have gone down because fewer women are in long-run relationships. That is the proximate cause. But you need to explain why fewer women are in long-run relationships (the ultimate cause), and saying that they spend more years in school, to take one example, does not get us very far. Why do they spend more years in school? Once you start down the whole chain of reasoning, things become much harder than they seem.

This is Elon Musk, a techno-oligarch with 241 million followers on TwitterX, spreading and amplifying Ceuta-linked right-wing disinformation, with one message reaching 9.9 million views and the other 7.9 million as of right now.
And here's the EU: "The European External Action Service has begun examining whether Russian actors sought to exploit the event on social media networks for political purposes".
Now, I'm telling you this as a person who has studied Russian information warfare for more than ten years: none of the Russian disinformation campaigns linked to the Ceuta crisis can possibly reach the impact of one techno-oligarch spreading right-wing disinformation on the platform he owns.
The EU may examine the efforts of Russian actors all it wants - I don't expect it to do anything that will address the problem - but ignoring the obvious, blatant, and direct information threat from the US techno-oligarchy is something much graver than simple ignorance on the EU's part.
