Here is what happened, but the larger calls go back last month: I’ve seen several calls circulating on Instagram. Several «French» accounts began promoting a French music festival taking place on October 17, apparently to attract young Brits to France, knowing how many travel there every year for music festivals. Greta was also involved, raising funds for these “student groups.” The choice of October 17 appears, at least to me, very much deliberate, with the aim of mobilizing French Algerians as well and turning the occasion into another public display of historical resentment. The date commemorates the 1961 massacre of Algerian protesters in Paris, which the Algerian regime continues to invoke in its demands for French recognition of colonial crimes and get reparations. Reminder that last year Algeria's parliament initially approved legislation calling for reparations for French colonial rule.
It appears a large group of people who live in Britain have travelled to France this weekend to riot and encourage others to do so.

"According to analysis conducted by the Financial Times, 24 ships were hit in the two weeks to 11 October, the most intense period of attacks in the entirety of the war. It is almost double the second worst period, when in the first two weeks of the war in March, 13 ships were hit. 'Iran may be developing its anti-ship missile capabilities to improve its ability to target vessels,' the Institute for the Study of War said." Bet you'll never guess who's helping Iran develop its anti-ship missile capabilities... The Strait remains perilous, oil hits $100 a barrel, and the country helping America's adversary in the Gulf gets sanctions lift, while the country helping to protect U.S. forces there from drone attacks gets its air defense system degraded. uk.news.yahoo.com/disturbing…

“You is a perfect jewess to test some gas on.” “The fuhrer is coming rats.” “Let there be an October 7 all day every day.” These are just some of the threats sent by a Haverford College professor to a Jewish colleague. An associate professor of religion at the Pennsylvania college, has been charged with felony cyberstalking.
Prosecutors release the full list of posts that Haverford religion professor Guangtian Ha allegedly directed at a Jewish colleague. Statements include "globalize the Holocaust," blood libels and other medieval anti-Judaism, Epstein conspiracies

Goodness, it was stunning. How could anyone do that? Who could care so little for history or beauty?

This is Limoges city hall. On fire. Storming and setting fire to seats of democratic government is insurrectionary violence. No grievance gives anyone the right to do this. Students have legitimate grievances. This violence is burying them. The missing teachers, overcrowded classrooms and anxiety about the future disappear behind the destruction. For a politics built on permanent confrontation, that can be useful. Mélenchon’s strategy connects separate grievances into a single indictment of the system. The confrontation becomes the cause. And violence feeds on perceived weakness. When the state appears to have disappeared, people test its limits. Each retreat invites another challenge. A kind of madness takes hold: destroying the institutions we depend on comes to look like liberation. I wrote in June that democracy rests on a promise: that the state is strong enough to guarantee everyone the same protection, the same rights and the same rules. When that promise breaks, the consequences extend far beyond security. Fear spreads. People protect themselves because they no longer trust that they will be protected together. They retreat into their group, their community, their identity. Those promising order gain ground. Distrust replaces the confidence that makes a common life possible. And is exploited by all those, inside and outside the country, who want to see it burn!

Warning - good news story!
"The new Museum of Moroccan Jewish Culture opened its doors in the city of Fez on Monday, marking the first time in history that an Arab Muslim country has allocated public funds to establish a museum entirely dedicated to Jewish culture. The museum offers a rich and diverse collection of ritual and everyday objects; archaeological, ethnographic, and artistic artefacts; archives and rare manuscripts; crafts; along with traditions, practices, and testimonies handed down through the 2,500 years of Jewish history in the country."

The father purged by Mao. The son sent to live in a cave. Xi Jinping's upbringing reads like a supervillain origin story. @JosephTorigian joins me on @schoolofwarpod to tell it...

Astonishing: BBC Verify has done more articles on the Israel/ Palestine conflict than on all the news in the U.K. put together.
Since Verify was launched in May 2023, more articles have been written about Israel and the Middle East than any other topic. Almost a quarter of all Verify articles. More than the US, more than Russia-Ukraine and, most remarkably, even more than UK politics. This is disproportionate coverage to an obsessive level. We wonder why some people have become so obsessed with us but we don’t need to look far to see that the national broadcaster is fanning the flames of this obsession.

Many American and European drones provided to Ukrainian units continue to fail or perform poorly. The same drones are being procured by NATO militaries. The companies that are succeeding have developed strong relationships with elite Ukrainian units and respond quickly to the feedback from Ukrainian operators. They benefit from Ukrainian expertise and the rapid innovation cycle in Ukraine. Battlefield performance in Ukraine should be one of the primary factors for future procurement choices by NATO militaries.
Talked to someone recently who knows a lot about defense tech, and he made an interesting point: the test of most military hardware right now is whether the Ukrainians want it. They have a hot war going against a determined opponent, and they know what works.

I'd forgotten that when Navi Pillay, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today, ran the UN "Human Rights Commission", it sent the names of dissidents reporting on the persecution of Uyghurs to China's Communist government. The UN fired the whistleblower, obviously, and promoted Pillay.

Important new episode @schoolofwarpod this morning: go deep with the Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy on how the Pentagon is trying to reverse years of decline in producing the materials and products America needs to maintain its position in the world.
“All of that is going to be way more expensive in blood and treasure.” Michael Cadenazzi oversees billions in Pentagon investments to rebuild America’s defense industry and prepare for the next war. Watch the full episode with @AaronBMacLean on School of War.

The words shameful and disgraceful do not even come close and exactly what we’ve been saying since the very beginning. Fake stories pushed by the regime in Iran - and amplified by relentlessly posting individuals in the West - to influence American public opinion, with the sole purpose of keeping the regime in power. “It’s remarkable that the Iranians managed to land their content in real media outlets, expanding the potential reach of their campaign”. Finally some self accountability from media outlets who themselves sent reporters into Iran to parrot regime narratives to the world, to the utter dismay and misery of the people living there. Read here ⬇️
Iranian operatives used OpenAI models and fake personas to help plant news articles critical of the US war against Iran in multiple US media outlets, OpenAI said. cnn.it/4hCyA1m

Waiting at gate at Tel Aviv airport to go back to US, checked my email. A reader of my Substack wrote this below. It's terrifying to me, but we have to know this is real, so we can fight it. I'm a 59-year-old Gen Xer; v. few people my age & older have any idea this is going on.

This is not a drill anymore. Yesterday in Amsterdam, dozens—perhaps hundreds—of people were chanting: “Long live 7 October.” This is outright glorification of one of the most brutal terrorist attacks in modern history, and the deadliest antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust. I don’t care who the people hiding behind those keffiyehs are, where they were born, or what their religion is. If you openly glorify terrorism and mass murder, you should be arrested and prosecuted, and deported where the law permits. We cannot build a functioning society if people are allowed to openly celebrate the mass murder of Jews, and we cannot expect Jews to stay in Europe if we simply let this pass. I would say exactly the same thing if far-right extremists were openly celebrating the Holocaust or Anders Breivik’s terrorist attack in the streets. The double standard here is staggering. In Belgium, people have been prosecuted for making offensive jokes about the Holocaust. Even Holocaust denial or minimization—not just glorification—is illegal. Yet we’re supposed to tolerate people openly celebrating a modern-day massacre of Jews? You cannot build a functioning society with people who openly celebrate the mass murder of innocent civilians. @ministerieJenV

Today my thoughts are with Joshua Mollel, 21yr-old agriculture student from Tanzania. Hamas savages racially abused him then executed him on the spot on #October7. Dragged his body into Gaza and Kept him for over 700 days. Israel took him home at the end for him to rest in peace.

I do not understand why it is so hard to just solely recognise the abhorrent suffering of the Jewish people on this one day. October 7th marks a day when Jews were specifically, violently victimised for being Jewish. It does not need to be 'balanced' with other issues or causes.

Thinking today of all killed & injured at the Nova festival but particularly of Erick & Ruth Peretz. Ruth had cerebral palsy & learning disability & loved music so Erick her Dad would lift her from her chair & dance with her. When the terrorists came Erick was last seen running with Ruth in his arms. (Pictured here with Yamit Peretz who survived only as she had left the festival earlier.)
