— Trump’s Arab Africa Affairs Adviser, Massad Boulos, said Washington’s proposal to extend the arms embargo across all of Sudan was highly important and one of President Trump’s priorities.
— Boulos acknowledged that there was no guarantee the proposal would pass, saying: “We may succeed in passing it, or we may not,” and adding that the outcome would depend on the balance of power within the UN Security Council.
— He said massive amounts of military assistance were reaching Sudan’s warring parties and warned that the military buildup was escalating.
— Boulos revealed that at least 12 countries, including all of Sudan’s neighbouring states in the region, were providing military support to the warring parties in one form or another.
— He declined to identify any of the 12 countries, even when asked directly whether members of the Quad mechanism were among those arming the parties.
— When confronted with evidence concerning the UAE’s alleged continued support for the Rapid Support Forces, Boulos said Emirati officials denied any direct involvement.
— He suggested that “some traders or others” might be responsible for supplies attributed to the UAE but provided no additional details.
— Boulos ended the discussion about those supplying weapons by saying: “We are not here to go into these details.”
Boulos made the remarks in an exclusive interview with BBC presenter Waihiga Mwaura, excerpts of which were broadcast on the BBC World Service programme Focus on Africa.

Worth listening to this @BBCAfrica interview with Massad Boulos, who seems skeptical of the likelihood that his arms embargo will be accepted. In all my years, Ive never seen US diplomacy so casually rolling the dice rather than doing the diplomatic spade work required to ensure that a US proposal is accepted. This is the very definition of performative. Moreover, his evasiveness in citing a single country currently selling weapons to either side in the conflict, despite pushing for a global arms embargo against them, shows how morally compromised US policy towards Sudan actually is. They clearly dont take their own proposal seriously, why should anyone else? bbc.com/audio/play/w3ct8n9v
