CITY OF CHARLESTON OPENS FREE STORM PARKING AT 6:00 P.M. TODAY AHEAD OF WEEKEND FLOODING
Downtown expected to see the worst impacts, beginning with Saturday morning’s high tide
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Five City of Charleston parking garages will open at 6:00 p.m. today, free of charge, so city residents can move their vehicles out of flood-prone areas before heavy rain from Hurricane Isaias and king tides arrive this weekend.
Downtown is expected to see the worst of the flooding. Flooding is expected around high tide three times: Saturday morning, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning. The worst is expected Saturday morning around the 8:00 a.m. high tide, and the City is urging drivers to stay off the roads during those windows, though flooding could impact roads all day.
Storm parking is available to city residents at the following garages:
• Aquarium Garage, 24 Calhoun St.
• Visitors Center Garage, 63 Mary St.
• Queen Street Garage, 85 Queen St.
• East Bay/Prioleau Garage, 25 Prioleau St.
• Charleston Tech Center Garage, 4 Conroy St.
Residents may enter after 6:00 p.m. today, Friday, October 9, and must exit before 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 11. Vehicles still in a garage after that time may be charged for the additional time.
To use storm parking, residents should pull a ticket at the entrance and keep it. At exit, they insert the ticket and scan the City’s storm parking QR code to leave free of charge. The code does not need to be printed. Residents can pull it up on a phone and hold the screen to the reader. Anyone who loses a ticket or does not have the code can press the help button on the exit machine, say they were there for storm parking, and give their name and address.
The QR code, garage information, TIDEeye, road closures, and the latest storm updates are all in one place on the City’s WaterWise page at charleston-sc.gov/WaterWise.
The forecast from National Weather Service Charleston remains largely unchanged. Rain begins late tonight and continues through Saturday, possibly into Sunday morning, with the most intense rain likely Saturday afternoon into the evening. The City is expecting 3 to 4 inches, with higher amounts possible in some areas. Tides in Charleston Harbor are forecast to peak near 7.7 feet around 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Gusty
Beyond downtown, the City is watching Church Creek in West Ashley, Beresford Creek and the Wando and Cooper rivers on Daniel Island, and Folly Road on James Island.
Residents are asked to never drive through a flooded road, secure loose items and yard debris, and clear the storm drains near their homes.
To report flooding or ask a non-emergency question, residents should contact the Citizens Services Desk at [email protected].
