According to an investigation by The Intercept, Lockheed Martin executives and employees contributed $59,500 to Republican Senator Susan Collins's campaign over just TWO MONTHS in 2023. At the time, Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jet program was nearly $200 BILLION over its original budget and roughly a DECADE behind schedule. Then, in July 2023, Collins voted to fund 83 more F-35 fighter jets. And here's what makes this particularly troubling: Collins wasn't just another senator. She was the top Republican on the Senate subcommittee overseeing defense appropriations. When lawmakers overseeing billions in taxpayer spending receive substantial campaign contributions from people employed by the companies benefiting from that spending, how can the public be confident that decisions are being made solely in the national interest? Americans deserve transparency, accountability, and a defense budget driven by military needs, not campaign fundraising. Susan Collins should explain how she evaluated the F-35 program's enormous cost overruns and delays before supporting additional purchases.
