The real story is, of course, different. In 2010 Ukraine democratically decided to seek EU membership and anchored it in its constitution (along with military neutrality and the exclusion of NATO membership). In early 2013 Shell signed a gas deal with Ukraine under Yanukovich (in photo). In late 2013 putin pressured Yanukovich to cancel EU association agreement against the will of people, parliament and law, which sparked the Maidan revolution and led to the removal of Yanukovich by parliament. During that chaos russia invaded Crimea in feb 2014 and Donbas in april 2014 (back then covert) as it saw its political and economic grip on sourvereign country deminish. All this time NATO was absent (due to UA neutrality) and Obama didn’t do any deal (apart from dismarming Ukraine up and to 2012) and didn’t do a thing to stop russian violence. These are not nuances, but the factual and verifiable exact opposite of braindead russian propaganda.

If Ukraine, you know, wanted to withdraw to that line, then obviously, you know, we have the rest of the deal set up and put together. Ukraine right now does not want to do that. The economic costs of war are tremendous. I said this when I was in Ukraine. War is just negative sum and everyone loses from war and I think that economics and business and peace is very, very positive sum.
