After a bit of a delay, I finally finished my translation of FLCLick Noise, an interview book with Tsurumaki & Sadamoto about the production of the original FLCL. Each chapter is a post on my blog with a Table of Contents linking each: simulacrarealities.substack.…

Amusing watching discourse on "why aren't the new tech rich donating to charity like Carnegie" given that they are? Net charitable donations are high and growing? They aren't building libraries because library demand is kinda low rn - 2026 isn't 1910, they are doing dif stuff.

This might be true, but the arg isn't sufficient - if the schools of high achieving parents all taught well, would parents stop doing extracurricular learning? Of course not - no force on earth could stop that red queen race! Tutoring inherently correlates with "good schools".
The distribution of math tutoring locations just looks like a map of affluent suburbs that people move to for the “good schools.” The failures of basic instruction are extremely widespread. slowboring.com/p/math-needs-…

One my most "heterodox" takes is that this econ consensus is wrong. It works in the model, but money is fungible across uses, classifying labor vs capital is very hard, and so in practice lower rates for capital pencils out to just regressive tax policy & regulatory distortions.
There's a funny disjuncture between everyday moral reasoning where working hard for your living is virtuous and optimal tax theory which says that's precisely the kind of income that needs to be taxed. slowboring.com/p/the-truth-a…

If we simply treated all income as equal and taxed accordingly, the changes in "savings behavior" would in fact be very marginal, and raising income taxes on higher earners has similar impacts anyway. It is easily worth the simplification & fairness benefits.

(IMO I think we are on more similar pages now in the other thread, so I won't continue this thread, you can correct me if you'd like to continue it)

The ultimate delusion of every armchair general is that the enemy has no real agency and doesn't get to respond to your plan. The current admin can at least take comfort in the fact that the lineage of dilettantes like them learning this lesson the hard way is very, very long.

The issue with these debates is that Trump won his elections by tiny margins - there is in fact dozens of voter groups who, if they flipped, deny him the White House. The MAGA core is absolutely immigration-focused! But for many swing voters in Pennsylvania it was cost-of-living
It’s because a lot of liberals and leftists have trouble accepting that voter anger over illegal immigration is sincere and deeply felt, rather than a symptom of economic frustrations. I’m nearly as pro-immigrant as you can get, but I think we have to face reality.

I'm certainly not saying no one was coping here, that definitely happened. But a lot of the time everyone is talking about different subgroups and casting them as decisive - which isn't even wrong, they were all decisive!

This is fun to watch but I have to imagine the data here is too vague to be meaningful. What do the numbers from the 1970's even mean, and where are they from? How do TV ratings vs home media sales add together? And so on. The narrative "feels" right, but that is a risky bet.

A very annoying modern discourse trend is that "Dyson Spheres" - literally a joke that doesn't make any sense to build - is now used so freely it gets stuck to any space-based solar array. Makes it harder to tell if this person is being a crackpot, or just going with the flow!
This is what this person said about Dyson spheres. You can judge: maybe all this stuff is right or maybe it’s just the way she thinks.

(Though even with the more charitable interpretations this is still silly - it is completely illogical to build solar arrays in space when Earth exists, outside of for operations that *have* to take place in space. And compute clearly does not)

The large majority of these are great buildings, and nice for architecture classes given how the rest of the campuses *don't* look like these, so they shake things up. They aren't all winners ofc - Boston continues to flail at doing modernism, and Princeton wtf are you doing??

Honestly today's round of college admissions discourse is actually a bit boring, because that admissions officer is just wrong. A top-scoring student with multiple extracurricular accomplishments is absolutely a get for most top schools! People are fighting a mirage here.

The American people obviously long for the Gaokao, but until they build that US admissions will stay decentralized, chaotic, and driven by the school's interests, not your own. But none of that means academic superstars don't get into top schools - they virtually all do.

Rewatching some old Toei films. One thing that strikes me that I hadn't noticed before (because I didn't know about it) is how close the effects animation is to the patterns set out by Kenzô Masaoka in his animation courses/manuals

They also essentially irrelevant though, right, as we currently face ~zero AI job loss. To poll respondents this is a vague hypothetical, and each is assuming different premises. If we *actually* faced 20% unemployment rates, all these numbers would scramble.
These results are kinda bleak imo

I hear this commonly but imo it doesn't hold up - Obama won re-election and left office popular with decent immigration policy approval. Trump's immigration stance is his most popular policy. The fact that Covid happened, and Trump is otherwise a gigantic fuck-up, is just life!
I’m generally a believer in deliverism but the current state of immigration policy really is its strongest rebuttal. Obama, Biden and Trump all deported tons of people and spent enormous resources on Securing The Border and none of them reaped any electoral reward for doing so.

Meanwhile, Biden may have "deported a lot of people" but he oversaw the largest recent foreign-born pop increase in the US by a country mile. In practice he was an immigration dove, and he suffered for it. He *also* fucked up massively in other ways, so telling how much is hard!

It does suck that politics is complicated and so attributing causation is difficult, but it just is. And there is minimal evidence that "they will hate you no matter what" is true - plenty of politicians leave office popular. Recent presidents have just been uniquely bad!
