Extreme heat is a maternal health challenge.
In Mt Darwin, Zimbabwe, the HAPI Study is generating evidence on how extreme heat affects pregnant women and identifying practical, locally driven solutions.
During heatwaves, the odds of preterm birth increase by 26%.
Aqueline Tsekera’s story shows why this evidence matters.

CeSHHAR Zimbabwe is proud to have participated in #AIDS2026, the 26th International AIDS Conference, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The conference brought together researchers, policymakers, advocates, and communities from across the globe to discuss progress, challenges, and innovations in the HIV response.
We were honoured to contribute to these important conversations and to share evidence and experiences from Zimbabwe.
Our participation highlighted the importance of locally generated evidence in informing policies and programmes that improve health outcomes and support resilient health systems.
Some of the recurring themes we encountered during #AIDS2026 included:
*Community leadership in the HIV response
*Advances in HIV prevention science and innovation
*Sustainable and resilient health systems
*Equitable access to HIV services and new technologies
*Country ownership and long-term financing of HIV programmes
These discussions highlighted both the progress that has been made and the work still needed to achieve a sustainable, people-centred HIV response.

Contraception Matters - Globally, an estimated 257 million women who want to avoid pregnancy are not using a safe, modern method of contraception. Expanding access to contraceptive choices remains one of the most effective ways to reduce unintended pregnancies. The #mascothack 2026 event put youth at the centre of co-creating relevant information for young people and empowering them on their sexual reproductive health journey #FamilyPlanning #WomensHealth #GlobalResearch [unfpa.org]

Knowledge is Power -Access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information helps people make informed decisions about their futures. The #mascothack 2026 event gave youth a platform and opportunity to participate in information creation, providing relevant information for young people. Research shows that barriers to information and services contribute significantly to unintended pregnancies worldwide. #HealthEducation #FamilyPlanning #Empowerment [unfpa.org]

Testing practical solutions to protect pregnant women from extreme heat.
Through the HAPI (Heat Adaptation for Pregnant Women & Infants) Study in Zimbabwe’s first Climate Health Demonstration Laboratory, CEHD is testing evidence-based interventions that help women adapt to rising temperatures during pregnancy.
The Personal Cooling Kit supports hydration and cooling with simple items like a water container, hat, umbrella, carry bag, and heat-adaptation messages.
Together with our partners, we’re generating evidence for scalable solutions that protect maternal & newborn health in a warming world.

Community radio is helping turn climate-health evidence into action.
Through the HAPI (Heat Adaptation for Pregnant Women & Infants) Study, CEHD is working with @MadziwaFm Community Radio and the District Health Office to deliver practical heat-health messages that help protect pregnant women, families, and communities from extreme heat.
From expert discussions to locally produced jingles in local languages, we’re making life-saving information accessible, relevant, and actionable.
Together with our partners, we’re building healthier, more climate-resilient communities—one broadcast at a time.
