"I have had multiple patients who have been heartbroken at having been coerced into selling their home and moving into a facility because of family pressures to not be a burden. I cannot currently protect vulnerable elderly from financial abuse with the current safeguards." – Dr. Alice Maria Chung, geriatrician, Special Joint Committee on MAID, Oct. 28, 2022

"Patients living with dementia face prejudice due to not only ableism but also ageism. It has also been shown that caregivers may not be good judges of the quality of life of their loved ones with dementia. Caregiver burden often influences the assessment by caregivers in terms of their patients' quality of life." – Dr. Alice Maria Chung, geriatrician, Special Joint Committee on MAID, Oct. 28, 2022

"We are not able to predict with accuracy what our own quality of life will be in the future, let alone if we are also living with a chronic medical illness. What right does the 60- or 70-y/o you have to judge the quality of life of the 80- or 90-y/o you?" – Dr. Alice Maria Chung, geriatrician, Special Joint Committee on MAID, Oct. 28, 2022

This Canadian senior says her calendar was empty until she scheduled a date for MAID and people surrounded her. "I never went out, I never saw anybody." Nobody should have to schedule their death to fill their calendar.

When @DavidPollackUSA asked me on @OANN if children might soon be euthanized, I explained that that's actually how Canada's euthanasia mindset began. Canadian history lesson 👇

Amanda Achtman, ethics director of Canadian Physicians for Life, pointedly noted that all MAiD deaths are in 'error,' because euthanasia is not healthcare, "but rather abandonment." 👉 Now in @LiveActionNews liveaction.org/news/report-e… @CdnLifeDocs

This afternoon, the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying released its 98-page report with one chief recommendation: "That the Government of Canada amend the Criminal Code to indefinitely exclude persons whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness from eligibility for medical assistance in dying."

Our terminology is still unclear in these matters of life and death.  “The committee also notes that the continuing ambiguity surrounding questions of terminology – ‘mental illness’ or ‘mental disorder’ – would benefit from greater clarity and consensus.” (p. 40)

While we take a moment to celebrate this win, let’s stay mindful that Canada’s existing euthanasia regime (even without this planned expansion) is already among the most permissive in the world. We have so much work to do to protect and defend all lives.
