I think Digger complicates the Vonnegut quote. The "art is useless" thesis is actually the easy way out. Digger is more about how artistic production can be a real achievement while still being embedded in forms of production that structures said achievement in contradictory ways

If Digger were really about the uselessness of art or art being merely a direct reflection of monied interests it would be far more like McKay's Don't Look Up, a more straightforward and less compelling film. The film works bc it considers art to be no less real than "level 4"
