As @Pontifex is admitted to Gemelli Hospital today for surgery, we join the Diocese of Rome in praying the Rosary for the Holy Father. Cardinal Baldassare Reina, vicar general of Rome, will lead the Rosary at noon EDT (11 a.m. CDT, 10 a.m. MDT, 9 a.m. PDT) in St. John Paul II Chapel inside Gemelli Hospital, and has asked parishes and religious communities in the diocese to pray at the same hour. We invite Catholics across the United States to join them in prayer. You can also watch the livestream from @VaticanNews on the Vatican News YouTube channel. Please keep Pope Leo and his doctors in your prayers. (CNS Photo/Lola Gomez)

Very strong statement just released by Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Military Services on the scheduled public execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, posted here in part: "...Do we really want to imitate the terrorists of this world and make a public spectacle of barbarically killing our adversaries? The crime committed by Nidal Malik Hasan was heinous, but does exposing the public to his execution serve any purpose? Has the potential moral injury, which the members of the firing squad might experience, been considered? Will the exposure of a live-stream to the young and impressionable during the 250th anniversary year of our independence be able to be repaired? The US military generally enjoys a good reputation in the world. Is there really a value to throwing them in the same boat with terrorists by broadcasting the image of the execution of a man in a wheel chair to the whole world? Does this decision reflect the dignity of the human person? I call upon all men and women of good will to ask that this decision be reconsidered and, at the very least, do what is possible to keep the exposure to the live-streaming of the proposed execution from the vision of the young and impressionable. As I would in the case of a procured abortion, I oblige any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request to be excused from this action contrary to the teaching of the Church."

In an era of anti-Catholicism and anti-immigrant nativism, Blessed Michael McGivney chose the Catholic explorer Christopher Columbus as the Order’s namesake in 1882. In an essay in the September 2020 issue of Columbia, historian William J. Connell explains, “For [the Knights] and many others, Columbus was celebrated as a figure of civic unity and a symbol that immigrants, particularly Catholics, possessed a rightful share in American identity.” Read more: bit.ly/4ifGgFZ Featured: The Christopher Columbus Memorial by sculptor Lorado Taft stands outside Union Station in Washington, D.C. Prayers for our Holy Father and for a quick recovery. 🙏🏻
Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

Friends, some critics say that the phrase “the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence indicates that America was founded on individual desire, not the common good. But Jefferson was classically educated, and he would have known that happiness, in the true sense, is bound up with virtue. That’s the opening argument of Aristotle’s “Nicomachean Ethics”: All of us desire happiness, and happiness is the activity of the soul in accord with virtue. Therefore, to speak of “the pursuit of happiness” isn’t to give in to Hobbesian subjectivism; it’s to open the soul to the virtuous pursuit of beatitude. And it’s a phrase worth reclaiming!

“From the time that I became a Catholic…I have been in perfect peace and contentment; I never have had one doubt…It was like coming into port after a rough sea; and my happiness on that score remains to this day without interruption.” -St. John Henry Newman

EWTN Global Catholic Network on Friday named Ursula Murua, a longtime leader of digital strategy, as the next president of EWTN News, effective Nov. 1. Murua, a native of Peru who is director of digital strategy and social media for EWTN News, succeeds Montse Alvarado, president and chief operating officer of EWTN News since 2023, whom Pope Leo XIV appointed in June as prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication. Alvarado takes up the Vatican post the same day. Murua’s path into journalism is linked to EWTN’s foundress. When Mother Angelica visited Peru, she gave a talk that Murua, then 20, covered for the then-fledgling ACI Prensa, EWTN Chairman of the Board and CEO Michael P. Warsaw told staff in a message announcing the appointment. “Mother could not have known that one of the young women listening to her would someday help take that same message around the world and eventually be entrusted with leading one of the divisions of the apostolate she founded,” Warsaw wrote. “In many ways, it feels designed by Providence.” Murua’s career in Catholic media spans more than 30 years and predates EWTN’s acquisition of ACI Prensa. At EWTN, she has held leadership roles across digital, editorial, and broadcast operations, including on the team of “EWTN Noticias,” the network’s flagship Spanish-language nightly newscast. She played a central role in launching the network’s social media presence and has led digital coverage of three papal conclaves, multiple World Youth Days and jubilees, International Eucharistic Congresses, and Synods of Bishops. “Ursula understands both the mission of EWTN and the rapidly changing ways people encounter news, faith, and one another,” Warsaw said in a statement. “She has helped shape the digital transformation of EWTN News from within while remaining deeply committed to the truth of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church.” In a first comment on her appointment, Murua said: "I have had the extraordinary privilege of watching Catholic media transform from radio and broadcast to websites, social media and mobile platforms, and now confront the challenge and promise of artificial intelligence.” “But the reason we do this work has never changed. People are hungry for truth, for meaning, and ultimately for Christ. Our responsibility is to understand where they are, how they are searching, and how we can faithfully meet them there.” Speaking of her successor, Alvarado noted Murua, in her role as president of EWTN News, will “continue the work we began together, expanding EWTN News’ digital presence and developing new ways to reach audiences while strengthening our commitment to journalism rooted in fidelity to the Gospel.” More: ewtnnews.com/world/us/ewtn-n… ✍️ EWTN News Staff

"It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War’s decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan’s actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: ‘do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people."

Today the Order of Preachers celebrates the Feast of St. Louis Bertrand! St. Louis Bertrand is known as the Apostle of the Americas and is the patron of Novice Masters. In his 37 years as a Dominican, he spent 7 years in the Americas where he converted over 23,000 Native Americans in Colombia, Venezuela, and the Caribbean Islands, and he spent most of the rest of his years as the Master of Novices in Valencia, Spain. A relative of St. Vincent Ferrer, he was baptized in the same baptismal font as the great saint, and later likewise became a fervent preacher. His powerful preaching led to the anger of some nobles however. On one occasion, a gun was pulled on him. Yet, with great faith, he prayed and made the Sign of the Cross over the weapon, which immediately turned into a crucifix. As novice master, he also sought to inspire his novices to become great and fervent preachers. May he continue to be an inspiration to those of us in formation to the priesthood. And through his intercession may many holy Dominicans be raised up to be great and faithful preachers. St. Louis Bertrand, pray for us!
