I’ve heard it’s because Notre Dame would simply opt out of their loss. BYU fans might be familiar with this since Notre Dame also opted out of losing to them last year.

Reminder that according to ESPN, if BYU wins their game on Saturday, they would still have less chance of making the playoffs than the team they would have beaten. Because brand perception trumps results in this broken, silly system

Ohio State really is last years Indiana. Lost to the National champion and runner-up. Dominated bad teams and got exposed on the line of scrimmage against the elite teams like Indiana and Miami.
