Who remembers WWF cereal from the golden era of professional wrestling? Back when Hulkamania was running wild and the World Wrestling Federation was taking over pop culture, wrestling wasn't just something you watched on television—it was everywhere, including the breakfast table! In the late 1980s and early 1990s, WWF-themed cereal promotions brought the excitement of the squared circle into grocery stores, with colorful packaging featuring larger-than-life wrestling superstars. For young fans, anything with the WWF logo on it was a must-have, whether it was action figures, ice cream bars, trading cards, or cereal boxes! It was a magical time when professional wrestling was part of everyday childhood, and even breakfast could make you feel like a Hulkamaniac! Who remembers seeing WWF cereal in the grocery store?

Herb Gerwig to Killer Karl Kox.
In 1961, The Sheik pulled my dad aside and told him, “You’re a local guy. You started out around here, and that’s why you’re having trouble getting over.”
For the previous four or five years, my dad had been wrestling mostly under his real name, Herb Gerwig, doing jobs on TV in places like Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana and Buffalo.
The Sheik believed he needed to get away and establish himself somewhere new. He gave my dad the money to move to Nebraska and go to work for the Duseks.
When my dad got there, Joe Dusek told him, “Nobody is going to pay to see a guy named Herb Gerwig. Think of something else.”
Later, Joe came back and asked what he had come up with and my dad hadn’t thought of anything.
So Joe did it for him.
Killer Carl Cox.
Later that same year, when my dad moved to Texas to wrestle for Western States, he changed the spelling.
Killer Karl Kox was born.
My old man always had a tremendous amount of respect for The Sheik and gave him a lot of credit for giving him his first real break in the wrestling business.
And he never forgot it.
Look back through Dad’s career during the 1960s and into the early ’70s and you’ll see something interesting: no matter where he was working regularly, he continued going back to Detroit to work for The Sheik—even if it was only for an occasional one-night shot.
The Sheik gave Herb Gerwig the opportunity. Joe Dusek gave him the name.
Without those two men, there may never have been a Killer Karl Kox.

Thinking about Baron Von Raschke. He recently participated in a wrestling match during the Oct. 10, 2026 match for Dreamwave Wrestling in La Salle, Ill. Von Raschke never got into the ring but rather applied the claw hold to a couple guys outside the ring. He's a fixture in our Tragos-Thesz Hall of Fame weekend each year.

Roy Welch belongs in the Wrestling Observer Hal of Fame in the non-wrestler category. If you are a voter in the #WONHOF here's reason #25 he belongs in the Hall of Fame: He trained and toured with Ginger, one of the earliest successful wrestling bears, and used the attraction to sell out towns during the Depression and wartime when money was scarce.
Ginger was trained as a cub with claws and teeth intact; the act was a genuine spectacle, not a later novelty copy, and it traveled the United States, Canada, and Mexico. @WONHOFTracker @davemeltzerWON
