Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, led by President Sam Register, have moved away from keeping their shows exclusive to Cartoon Network or Max (which is now the case in the U.S.). Instead, they are aggressively licensing major animated properties to competing streaming platforms, such as Disney+, Hulu, and Prime Video.
Corporate Restructuring: This shift was accelerated by corporate realignments following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Because the company deprioritised kids and family programming on Max in favour of young adult and adult animation, Register’s team was instructed to find external buyers for their family-oriented content.
Leveraging Legacy IP: The new model relies heavily on the strength of established franchises. Spin-offs and revivals like Adventure Time: Side Quests (Disney+/Hulu), The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball (Hulu), and Batman: The Caped Crusader (Prime Video) have been highly successful for external streamers, drawing massive viewership numbers and generating a new revenue stream for the studio.
The Future of the Linear Network: While Cartoon Network has seen a severe drop in advertising revenue over the last decade, it continues to operate. The studio is balancing its external sales strategy with an ongoing commitment to developing original series (such as Super Mutant Magic Academy) for the traditional Cartoon Network channel and Adult Swim, aiming to foster new storytelling alongside established brands.
