Remember that IWACO is happening again in 2024! We have a full month to put together a description of ongoing work or just write an extended abstract on an interesting idea (I'm sure you have plenty!)
Glad to say that IWACO is happening again in 2024! If you didn't get your fix of Aliasing, Capabilities, and Ownership last year, now's your chance :) 2024.splashcon.org/home/iwac…

Holy aliasing control, Batman! IWACO is back! This is a great venue for discussing all things aliasing, capabilities and ownership. Borrowing? We’ve got you covered! Fractional permissions? Any time of the day! Maybe something completely new? Welcome to submit before 12 July!
Interested in Aliasing? Capabilities? Ownership? Already working on a problem, or just have an insight to share? Lucky you: the CfP for IWACO'23 is out! #SPLASH23 We accept papers on work-in-progress, novel ideas and open questions. Find out more: 2023.splashcon.org/home/iwac…

Hey PL Twitter! I’m teaching a course on semantics next semester. Does anyone know an easy-to-use tool for playing around with operational semantics? I’m thinking stuff like building derivation trees using a set of inference rules. Doesn’t need to do induction or anything fancy.

I would love to teach them some Coq or Isabelle, but for a 5 credit undergrad course there is only so much you can cram in there. I’m looking to keep the overhead low.

I wonder if they serve nasal demons?

Today my Ph.D. student Viktor Palmkvist made an excellent presentation of our paper on Statically Resolvably Ambiguity at POPL 2023 in Boston, popl23.sigplan.org/. I'm really proud of the work and Viktor's results. See the open access version: doi.org/10.1145/3571251

Just heard my daughter (two and a half years old) from the other room: “If you’re happy and you know it, poop on the floor! (Poop, poop)” I did not teach her these lyrics, but part of me is proud about her understanding the form well enough to improvise!

(Also, luckily she did not poop on the floor for real)

Looking for a slide with a “graph” of program logics, with arrows showing what inspired what, starting from Hoare (Floyd?) and going up to modern separation logic. I seem to recall it was made by @ilyasergey, but I may be wrong! Does anyone know what slide I’m talking about?

Just learned the very sad news that one of our members, Eelco Visser, passed away yesterday. We are all quite saddened by this rather unexpected news of the passing of such a vibrant researcher.

It was just pointed out to me that coupling (as in coupling and cohesion) is not pronounced “coopling”, but “cupling”. I may have mislead some 130 Swedish CS students (and even more before this year…)

4 WAYS OOP INHERITANCE IS LIKE GOTO 1. It's mostly "considered harmful". It should be your last resort. 2. It does many different things. Goto was used to emulate control flow, loops, subroutines, exceptions, resource cleanup... we replaced it with *specific* constructs.
