Somehow, the world feels like a better place now that I know that a gathering of ladybirds is called a 'loveliness'. So here's a loveliness of ladybirds on a twinklement of stained glass at St. Mary's, Brownshill, Gloucestershire.

I note that politicians and journalists have been falling over themselves in praise of Lord Jeffrey Archer who has died aged 86. I don’t share that view.
Back in 1987 Archer sued the Daily Star for libel after they reported he had paid for sex with a prostitute.
Thanks to his lies in the witness box he was awarded £500K in damages, a record at the time. Actually the paper was right he had had paid £6K for her services.
The editor, a talented Aussie called Lloyd Turner who had done a great job for the paper, was fired by the idiot owner who preferred to believe a politician than his own staff.
That verdict left Turner, according to his wife, a broken man, and he died five years later at 57.
So, he never had the pleasure, some six years later, of seeing Archer, being jailed for perjuring himself and forced to hand back the £500K.
Archer’s lies destroyed Turner’s career and hurried the end of his life.
Disgracefully, that story has been ignored by the good and great in the hagiographies.

I was on my way to The New Yorker festival to speak on Russia with David Remnick when I received the news of Anna Politkovskaya's assassination. A brave soul who saw things clearly and was not afraid to also speak clearly. As I said then, we don’t know who did it, and may never know, but we know who is responsible and that his address is the Kremlin. I encourage you to honor her and her legacy by reading her works, not just her obituaries.
Novaya Gazeta releases Anna Politkovskaya commemorative stamp
On the 20th anniversary of the murder of prominent Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya today, Novaya Gazeta releases a stamp featuring her portrait.
The photo of Politkovskaya is rendered in the style used for portraits of Nobel laureates. The editorial team says that had the journalist not been killed, she would have been the one to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Politkovskaya gained international renown for her exposés of Kremlin corruption and the brutal treatment of civilians in Chechnya at the hands of Russian forces during the Second Chechen War.
Despite the risks that came with reporting from Chechnya and the numerous acts of intimidation and violence she was subjected to, Politkovskaya refused to give up writing. She was killed by four gunshots at point-blank range, including one to her head, on 7 October 2006.

It is clear that many foreign student loans are a scam on the British taxpayer. Given we have £3 trillion in national debt, why are these loans even being granted? The British state is a soft touch for foreign fraudsters.

Wonderful woman. Vladimir Putin may not have given orders personally for her murder, but he made no perceptible effort to see that her real killers were caught.
Remembering journalist Anna Politkovskaya, murdered in Moscow 20 years ago today.
Anna wrote for Index from Vienna in 2002. She had been sent there for her own safety after she received threats following her reporting from Chechnya. Her story is here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/epd…

Poppett may be a sandwich short of a picnic but she always brings such a smile to your face. When she sleeps, oh boy does she sleep, a nuclear explosion wouldn't wake her and eventually she wakes and casually sits with her legs crossed. What a little character 💖

20 years ago, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered for speaking truth to power in Putin’s Russia.
She exposed the brutality of war. She gave a voice to its victims. And she refused to be intimidated into silence.
This cost her life. But her memory is carried by so many to this day.
Press freedom in Russia has now only been crushed further. But Anna’s voice continues to travel far beyond Russia’s borders.
She remains a symbol of courage, of fearless journalism and of the power of truth in the face of oppression.
Today, we honour Anna’s legacy. And we think of all those who continue the work she gave her life for.

My brilliant colleague @BBCSteveR has been remembering Ana Politkovskaya today. She was the most courageous of journalists. I write about her at length in my new book #HardTruth out tomorrow. Independent journalism remains a vital defence against tyranny…
20 years ago today Anna Politkovskaya, one of Russia’s most prominent investigative journalists, was murdered. I found no mention of the anniversary in today's Russian newspapers. #ReadingRussia

HE PROTECTED 54,000 DOCTORS. THE @NHS PROTECTED ITSELF.
In January 2014, Dr Chris Day (@drcmday) was working overnight in the intensive care unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. Two locum doctors didn't show up. The unit was running at double the patient load the national guidelines allow. He raised the alarm. He reported unsafe staffing. He linked the situation to two patient deaths.
That's what the NHS calls a whistleblower.
What followed was eight years of litigation, a legal battle all the way to the Court of Appeal, and over £700,000 of public money spent by Health Education England (@NHSE_WTE) and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (@LG_NHS) trying to stop his case being heard at all.
Here's the really elegant bit. HEE's opening legal argument wasn't that they'd done nothing wrong. It was that whistleblowing law simply didn't apply to them, because they didn't directly employ junior doctors. They were just the organisation that controlled the career progression of every single one of England's 54,000 junior doctors. Totally different thing.
Dr Day fought that argument to the Court of Appeal and won. The law was clarified. All 54,000 junior doctors below consultant grade in England now have statutory whistleblowing protection. One man, crowdfunding against three QCs, changed employment law for an entire profession.
No formal apology from the NHS. No reinstatement. No path back to a consultant career. He has worked as a locum A&E doctor ever since, doing overnight shifts while his opponents collected salaries, pensions, and the occasional glowing tribute to NHS transparency.
During the 2022 tribunal hearing, the communications director at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust deleted up to 90,000 emails. The director whose entire NHS email archive was also deleted during live litigation happened to be the instructing legal client in the case. The tribunal described the conduct as extraordinary. Nobody was prosecuted. The trust issued a partial apology about a press release.
The system did exactly what it always does. It absorbed the cost, deflected accountability, and waited for the man it destroyed to run out of money or energy.
He hasn't.

On this day 20 years ago, Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow, on Vladimir Putin’s 54th birthday.
She had spent years reporting on Putin’s Russia and exposing the atrocities committed during the Second Russian-Chechen War.
Dozens of journalists have been killed for their work during Putin’s rule, while more than 1,500 Russian journalists have been forced into exile since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine alone.

A very happy birthday to the wonderful Yo-Yo Ma! A true force for good in a world that rather needs it... and as kind and generous in private as in public (not always the case!). A truly special artist and human being. (And, incidentally, a dab hand at preparing a lobster...)
