Hipkins claims that their Capital Gains Tax won't impact businesses. Well it does. It literally says on their policy page that the tax includes commercial property. Many Kiwis own the buildings they operate their small business from, like a dairy or a restaurant. And if they decide to sell up for retirement, Chris Hipkins wants a part of it. You can’t trust Labour on tax.

National has cancelled next year’s fuel tax hike to help you with the cost of living. That’s 12 cents a litre you won’t be paying in 2027. We cancelled Labour’s fuel tax hikes, scrapped Auckland’s Regional Fuel Tax, now we’ve cancelled this one too. Times are still tough for many Kiwis, so this gives a bit more breathing room while the economy recovers. I’ll be straight with you. It will need to increase over time - starting with 5c a litre in January 2028. Because we do need to maintain enough funding in the transport system for road maintenance, public transport services and infrastructure investment. In the meantime, we’ll top up the Transport Agency for the reduction in revenue. Without that, you’d be looking at serious cuts to road maintenance, resilience and infrastructure. This is a responsible approach. More money in your back pocket now, and continued investment in the roads you use every day.

Seriously bored Labour members in Parliament listening to Chris Hipkins’ response to this Growth Budget. Heads down, looking beaten.

When tourism grows, so does our economy. When our economy grows, that means more jobs, higher incomes, better public services and standard of living for Kiwis. That’s why we’re backing a new campaign to bring more Australians over to New Zealand on holiday. New Zealand is open, the deals are on, and we’re ready to welcome our mates across the ditch.

I am devastated that Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming has died and another officer is critically injured after a violent incident in Nelson last night. Police across New Zealand do an incredible job keeping us safe and it’s heart-wrenching for an officer to lose her life carrying out that duty. I extend my deepest condolences to Lyn’s loved ones and colleagues and hope for the recovery of those injured. This is a devastating day for Police and for New Zealand. Lyn will never be forgotten.

#REVEALED: Labour blames Health NZ’s $130m monthly deficit on ‘underfunding’ but Labour’s own fiscal plan promised to invest less. Verrall’s comments are either desperate spin or an embarrassing mistake. This is not a money problem, it’s thanks to Labour’s botched reforms.

Parliament is back today and our Government is continuing to deliver our 100 Day Plan. We’ve already: Narrowed the Reserve Bank’s mandate to focus on price stability and fighting inflation, axed Labour’s Ute Tax, stopped work on Labour’s Jobs tax, withdrawn the Government from Let’s Get Wellington Moving, stopped the Auckland Light Rail project, started work on a National Infrastructure Agency, improved security for the health workforce in hospital emergency departments, banned cell phones in schools, and mandated an hour a day of reading, writing and maths at primary and intermediate schools. This week, we continue full steam ahead on progressing our 100 day plan in Parliament.

Today many folk went back to work for 2024 and might have needed a ute to get their job done. Good news if that’s you, because our Government has officially axed the ute tax, delivering less tax for hardworking farmers and tradies.

New Zealanders voted not only for a change of government, but for a change of policies and a change of approach - and our Coalition Government is ready to deliver that change. Our 100 day plan we have put forward today is comprehensive and hugely ambitious. From now, you’ll see us introduce legislation to refocus the Reserve Bank on a single mandate of price stability – targeting a takedown of inflation so you can catch a break from the cost of living crisis. We will be introducing legislation to ban gang patches and stop gang members gathering in public, and be giving Police greater powers to search gang members for firearms and making gang membership an aggravating factor at sentencing. We will require primary and intermediate schools to teach an hour of reading, writing and maths per day starting in 2024 and be banning the use of cell phones in schools. We will set five major targets for the health system, including for wait times and cancer treatment. You’ll see us begin the repeal of Three Waters, stop blanket speed limit reductions, and introduce legislation to remove the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax, and so much more. These are just a few of our 49 actions we will take in our first hundred days. Right now, we are getting to work.
