We have a new paper out in @JAppliedEcology - "Long-term surveys support declines in early-season forest plants used by bumble bees"
See the quoted tweet for a news article covering some of the key findings

ALT Graphical abstract showing changes in forest, grassland, and wetland plant cover across Illinois since 1997. A second plot shows when the different habitats bloom throughout the year and how rusty patch bumble bee records overlap with those habitats. Grasslands and wetlands offer more total resources than forests, but forests provide the earliest resources when queens are out on the landscape.
Losses of springtime flowers in wooded landscapes likely undermine bumble bee health and survival, researchers report.

Congrats to the incredible @amywaananen for passing her oral prelim exam today! A huge accomplishment and we are all excited to see what she finds as she builds a model of #pollen movement between fragmented landscapes, #echinacea fitness and #geneflow and reproductive success!

Part of why it is so hard to study #groundnesting #bees is bc some species literally CLOSE UP their nest entrance when they go inside! End of a Sharpie for scale of this #perdita nest. Very cute but very frustrating.
