Capital punishment is unacceptable in any case. The planned broadcast of the taking of a life by firing squad is nothing short of performative barbarism. Do we really want our children, who will inevitably view it, exposed to the pornography of a state-sponsored slaying?
A televised execution, particularly one by such violent means does nothing to prevent future crimes and may encourage them by conferring martyrdom on the Ft. Hood killer. Further, it contributes to the characterization of our nation as a violent, vengeful place.
Today we celebrate the feast of St. Carlo Acutis, a modern saint who showed that holiness is possible at any age. A special blessing to the community of St. Carlo Acutis Parish in Chicago. May the witness and example of St. Carlo Acutis continue to guide your mission.
To all the runners taking part in the Chicago Marathon tomorrow: May your long hours of preparation bear fruit in joy and perseverance. As you run through the streets of Chicago, may you encourage one another & discover the strength that comes from hope & community. God bless!

Remember the power of the Rosary: it is meant to bring peace, deepen faith and draw us closer to Christ. Let us take up our beads and pray with our family, with our friends or neighbors. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.
