After my campaign ended, I reached out to the Bowser administration in good faith and requested a meeting to discuss our recommendations for 311. I brought talented young people with deep technology experience. We followed up with a memo outlining improvements to both the systems residents use and the technology behind them. OUC Director Heather McGaffin attended that meeting. @OUC_DC What came of it? I have seen no meaningful follow-through. A few weeks after our meeting, the administration scheduled more 311 listening sessions. Listening should lead to action. Residents should not have to keep describing the same failures while practical recommendations go nowhere. We have people who know how to fix these problems and want to help. But their contributions mean little when city leadership refuses to act or hold anyone accountable. We have tolerated a culture of cronyism for too long in DC: hire your friends, protect incompetent leadership, reward bad management, then blame fiscal cliffs and deficits when services fail. Raise taxes. Repeat. As a Democrat, I want a government that actually delivers the strong public services we champion. What pride can we take in those values if we cannot even administer the services people depend on?
