Pitch video is out if you wanted to see it! Ignore my nervous breath in the beginning 😅
Thrilled to share that I won a 90 second pitch competition yesterday and won $500 😁! It was hosted by the University of Delaware’s Environmental Institute and the challenge was to pitch the importance of your environmental research to a panel of judges in under 90 seconds.

Let's hope investing in Ginkgo $DNA is the right hedge against my future AI-driven career obsolescence 🤞
Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use. Read more: anthropic.com/news/claude-di…

This is the type of dream company and mission I'd like to work on someday. Super cool announcement. Definitely keeping an eye on Pioneer Labs! 🚀🦠
Today, Pioneer Labs is announcing our first step towards terraforming Mars. 🚀🌼 With equipment that fits in just a single rocket launch, we can convert Martian dirt, water, and air into enough building materials to construct a small city on Mars. To do it, we made the first microbe for Mars. We found the best microbe on Earth and used evolution to teach it how to source all of its nutrients directly from Martian materials. The first astronauts will be greeted with safe shelter already filled with water, oxygen, and rocket fuel for the return journey. This is the first step toward using biology to make Mars a friendly place for life. It lets us live off the land and helps us build the next great frontier. It's the first of five organisms we need to green Mars ⬇️

In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy. She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid. The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%. She handed out the checks herself. In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college. When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months. You've probably heard that part. Here's the part you haven't: The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top. Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave. She built her county an entire hospital. She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it. In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees. Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal. In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release. And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it. She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway. She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did. Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸

In a medical milestone, a customized base editor was developed, characterized in human and mouse cells, tested in mice, studied for safety in non-human primates, cleared by @US_FDA for clinical trial use, manufactured as a complex with an LNP, and dosed into a baby with a severe, rapidly progressing genetic disease... all in an astounding 7 months. Best of all, the infant patient shows apparent benefit. Congratulations to @kiranmusunuru, Rebecca Ahrens-Nicklas, and other team members for this heroic and inspiring effort, which has implications for the hundreds of millions of patients that suffer from thousands of genetic diseases. drive.google.com/file/d/1Jfk…

Ignore the vibe shift at your own peril
For me, in the last month or so AI has gone from a gimmick to an incredibly useful way to use the internet — o3 mini, Deepseek R1, and Grok 3 Deep Search are all now good enough that I can ask them to find information for me and it *just works*

Me getting a PhD in the AI era
Google developed an AI 'co-scientist' which comes up with hypotheses and ways to test them. They found researchers with an unpublished discovery about phage ->AI managed to come up with the same idea. In thread, link to news , Google post, and how to sign up as a beta tester.

Rocketable is building the first 1 person $1B company. The plan is simple: buy up software companies, fire all the employees and replace them with AI agents. Literally the most AGI pilled idea I have heard.

Pretty excited about this new service offering! Seems like something to keep a close eye on. Hoping we get some color on the financials for these deals in the next earnings call $DNA @jrkelly
Today, we're excited to announce that Ginkgo Automation will design and deploy a flexible, anaerobic-enabled laboratory automation system for the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC/@GLBioenergy), a U.S. Department of Energy-funded Bioenergy Research Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. hubs.la/Q033JbWC0

What kind of childhood makes a top scientist? Is it enough to have all the right traits (brilliance, grit, etc) or do you need the right family too? And why should we care? A 🧵 on our paper on the Nobel Laureates. A teaser: the income distribution of the laureates' fathers.1/N
