They don’t. Russian politicians grew up in a world where the Ukraine was part of their country, so they see the Ukrainian state as a rebellious child that can be reconciled with.
Old politicians don’t use the internet as much so information gets to them in a slow manner. They don’t fully comprehend just how batshit crazy the Ukraine has become and how Ukros want to kill every human on Russian land. They don’t notice how Ukrainians celebrate like monkeys whenever Zelensky’s forces bomb students, children’s parks and buses.
