It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government canโt selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But thatโs exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, itโs important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administrationโs fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone โ all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And itโs not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies โ from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omarโs life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and sheโs been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omarโs political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, thereโs no reason to believe it will stop with her โ or that future presidents, in either party, wonโt do the same.

BREAKING NEWS: Billionaire Sir Richard Branson launches a SCATHING attack on Trump and his disgusting coziness with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that gets under Trumpโs skin...
"I never thought Iโd have to say this in my lifetime, but itโs 2026, and unfortunately, nothing is the way it used to be," wrote Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, on LinkedIn. "The Trump administration has become an enabler of autocrats and dictators, placing their personal whims ahead of the interests of the American people and the free world. What is it about Putin that makes President Trump fawn over him?"
"How can Americaโs allies ever trust this administration again, when it is now turning against them in a time of war and suffering?" he asked.
Trump has repeatedly betrayed our Ukrainian allies in recent days. First, he announced a shocking deal with Putin to allow millions of barrels of diesel onto global marketsโa move that will inject cash directly into the Russian war machine. Then, he launched a concerted smear campaign against President Zelenskyy, claiming that Putin is "easier to deal with."
The betrayals escalated when Washington failed to provide its customary early warning to Kyiv regarding an imminent Russian ballistic missile attack. Now, it appears the White House has ordered a temporary suspension of Starshieldโa military version of Elon Muskโs Starlink, upon which the Ukrainian armed forces rely.
"The throttling of Starlink/Starshield and the inexplicable failure to provide advance warning of Russian missile launches have already led to the needless deaths of Ukrainian civilians," Branson wrote. "How much worse can it get?" "If one thing is clear, itโs that European leaders must move past the initial shock of Trumpโs recent actions and step up. This is as much about European freedom as it is about Ukraineโs sovereignty. Both are worth fighting for," he continued. "Every option should now be on the tableโfrom transferring frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, to delivering advanced weapons systems like the German Taurus."
"Why, oh why, is this happening? We cannot allow the free world to be dismantled before our very eyes," Branson concluded.
We couldnโt agree more. Trump is an enemy of Ukraine, an enemy of democracy, and an enemy of the American people. When the Democrats regain power, we will have a major task ahead of us. Every trace of this monstrous manโs legacy must be erased.
Please โค๏ธ and share if you think Trump is Putinโs puppet!

This is completely outrageous and disgusting. This must immediately be blocked by Congress and Trump should be impeached for this. The US is now funding Putinโs war machine as he murders civilians including children. We are lost as a country.

The biggest loser from the CLARITY Act failing?
The banks.
They may have just shot themselves in the foot.
Banks spent months warning about stablecoins draining deposits from the banking system. The CLARITY Act had explicit protections designed to address that exact risk.
Now the bill is dead.
Crypto regulation shifts back towards SEC and CFTC, who don't need to pander to the banks for support.
The banks killed the very legislation that could have saved them, and the consequences could be massive.

1/ This one stings. Our team gave everything we had to get the Clarity Act across the finish line. So did most of the industry. This was an opportunity bigger than Ripple or one company - we did this for the industry, for consumers and to cement the USโs position as the crypto capital of the world and as a leader in the future of finance. Ultimately, consumers and U.S. competitiveness got left behind.
2/ A post mortem needs to be done on why this failed (more from me on that in the days ahead). The politics of the democrats (the anti-crypto army) was elevated over good policy.
3/ There is still reason for optimism for crypto in the United States. Now, the SEC, under Chair Atkins, and the CFTC, under Chair Selig, will continue to work hard to issue rules to fill the legislative gap and we will continue to be actively engaged in that rule making process.
4/ Ripple's business has never been stronger โ real demand across traditional finance and the digital asset ecosystem. A missed vote in Washington doesn't change our momentum, our global footprint, or our customers.

๐จNEW: I asked @Sen_Alsobrooks (D-MD) whether, after playing a key role in negotiations over both GENIUS and Clarity, she was comfortable letting cryptoโs market structure bill die by voting no today.
โNo, itโs not going to die. You know why itโs not going to die? Because over 70 million Americans are engaging in an industry that is unregulated, and we have a responsibility to regulate.โ
Alsobrooks accused Republican leadership of โplaying a gameโ by forcing todayโs vote while refusing to hold President Trump accountable for what she described as crypto โcorruption.โ

The Clarity Act passed out of @BankingGOP Committee on a bipartisan 15 to 9 vote because my colleagues and I know that we must ensure the United States leads the way on digital asset regulation, and time is running out to secure Americaโs leadership. Every moment we wait to get this bill to the presidentโs desk is a moment we risk ceding this leadership to another country. We owe it to American consumers to make sure this industry operates under US regulations and builds on US soil.

๐จNEWS: A Dem source familiar with a bipartisan meeting between Senate lawmakers today described ethics negotiations as โrocky,โ citing what they characterized as an โabout-faceโ by GOP members and the White House on an agreement they say had previously been reached ahead of the Senate Banking Committee markup last month.
That agreement, Iโm told, originally included a provision that would have allowed state attorneys general to sue the DOJ for failing to enforce certain ethics provisions.
GOP sources respond by saying that concerns were later raised by senators not involved in the ethics discussions about allowing state AGs to bring such actions against federal officials, including members of Congress.
