TODAY IS THE DAY - OXFORD's ST. PETER's CEMETERY TOUR
From 3 PM today, October 18, to about 4:30, I will give a tour of the front, old part, of St. Peters Cemetery. I do these tours for tips. This is a history tour, there are NO ghosts involved. Ghostbusters may not be scared of no ghost, but I am! Meet me in the Southwest corner of the Cemetery at North 16th and Jefferson. Park on Jefferson. We have 70 degrees and sunny. Wear a jacket, and a hat, the wind always blows in the Cemetery. Don't forget to pee before you come!

OXFORD'S St. PETERS CEMETERY TOUR - THIS SUNDAY - OCTOBER 18
This Sunday, at 3 PM, I will give an hour and a half walking tour of the front half of old St. Peter's Cemetery.
I do these tours for tips. There is no need to tell me you are coming, just show up. Meet me in the Southwest corner of the Cemetery, at Jefferson and North 16th. I will be there in a RED shirt! Park on Jefferson, and don't block anyone's driveway. This is a historical tour. NO Ghosts are invited. I am scared of them!
Come meet and hear about many of my friends I "live" with every day:
Three Ole Miss Chancellors, one Mississippi US Supreme Court Justice, the smartest Cavalryman in the Confederacy, several UM Professors, a bunch of Confederate Veterans, the model for Colonel Rebel, the FIRST Oxford Federal Judge, most of the Faulkner family, Who is buried in the Circle of Cedars?, two University Civil War Hospital Doctors, the UM Freshman who put the steer on the University building roof, Our Revolutionary War Soldier, Our War of 1812 Soldier, and our War with Mexico Soldier, several others, and whoever else we bump into?
We have a 71 degree sunny day, Sunday. Pee before you leave the House, Condo, Apartment, or Bar! There are NO bathrooms in St. Peters. You may bring your husband IF you have no other baby sitter, Fans of Lane Kiffin are NOT welcome, Bring your best attitude. Wear a hat and walking shoes. We will finish by 5 PM, at the latest, so that you can STILL get a good seat at The Library BAR! You are NOT allowed to do anything in the Cemetery that gets ME in trouble. Pee before you come. No dogs or liquor allowed in the Cemetery, unless the Bottle is given to Faulkner. We start at 3:05 sharp! Come see me and all my friends. Don't forget to PEE!
The TWO MOST USED CIVIL WAR RIFLE BULLETS
On the left you have a .577 caliber Pritchett ball. It was used in the P53 Enfield, British musket Rifles. Many, many were imported into the North as well as the South. The lubrication for the bullet was on the paper wrapping, so you put the bullet in the rifle with some of the paper still wrapped around the bullet. Bullets grabbing the rifling produced a great deal of friction.
To the right is a Harper's Ferry - Burton ball, in .58 caliber. These were used in US Springfield Rifles, produced from 1855 on up. The lubricant was on the bullet itself, so you loaded the bullet without the paper that it, and the powder, were wrapped in. The grooves on the lower part of the ball held the lubricant, and it was thought they helped with the aero dynamics, to keep the nose pointed toward the target, so it would not tumble. The rifling primarily did that by spinning the bullet.
As you can see, both soft lead bullets have hollow bases. When the powder charge exploded, that force would spread the thinner base of the bullet outward, to "grab" the rifling cut into the barrel. That gave the bullet its spin in going out of the barrel. That made the bullet much more accurate. Because of that, the bullet could be made slightly undersized, so it could be easily dropped into the barrel, instead of having to be rammed into the barrel. That saved time in loading.
Here is a .58 Caliber cartridge for a US Springfield. The bullet is at top, and the powder is below. The paper would be torn at the bottom, and the powder would be poured in the barrel. The bullet would then be dropped in.
